Alan "Gumby" Marques on OpenMatRadio and Details for Instructor of the Year contest

Welcome to the Stripes Series. For many, stripes on your belt represent time you’ve been training. This time is not enough to jump an entire belt but many believe the effort should be recognized, so you get a stripe. The “Stripe Series” is a series of short interviews and grappling news that will be released between feature length interviews.

Our first interview for this series was recorded at the KO Finisher/Hip Hop Chess Federation event in Anaheim on February 16, 2014. It was a huge honor for Paul to interview one of his heroes Alan “Gumby” Marques. Gumby is a founding member of OnTheMat.com, the premiere site for news and gear since the 90s. Gumby has dedicated countless hours to the jiu jitsu community through his journalism, philanthropy, teaching, reffing and competing. He was awarded his blackbelt from Ralph Gracie in 2006. Today, Gumby is the head instructor at his Heroes Martial Arts in San Jose. A true martial artist and community activist Gumby has worked closely with the Hip Hop Chess Federation to educate the community, especially at-risk youth. In this interview we discuss mastery, The Hip Hop Chess Federation, KO Finisher and of course jiu jitsu theory. Stay tuned to OpenMatRadio for more content with Prof. Marques in the near future!

Mastering the Crucifix is designed to give each style of learner what they need: read an explanation, quickly watch the technique from 2-3 angles, then see it taught in a video. You get the depth of a book and the clarity of a DVD video, with the bonus of a totally new experience of rapid technique assimilation from multi-angle animations. You know and trust OpenMatRadio to only work with reputable companies that are good for the jiu jitsu community, ArteChoke media fits that description. Surprised we haven't seen a 10th Planet nominee yet.
