I competed the weekend before last and put one of my opponents in the lockdown. When I went to sweep with the electric chair I saw him wince and tried to finish it. He ended up escaping and catching me with a tibia lock.

Today he posted on FB that he went to the doctor and apparently he has a torn acl, sprained lcl, and a damaged meniscus from that match and that he will have to have surgery. I feel bad because he is a super nice and very talented guy. I hate seeing anyone get injured especially in what seems to be a bit of a freak injury. Be careful with your lockdowns guys! They can apparently break shit too!

I guess this is a classic "winning the battle but losing the war" situation.

Not sure when it happened. My belt is perfect length haha. I like it long because it sets me apart and it causes some people to fixate or reach for it which helps me get into my sprawl/front headlock game. It's kind of signature of mine now lol.

I definitely noticed that he was limping when he got up off the mat. He wasn't limping before the match. You are a good man Logan. There seem to be more and more guys around who don't care if they hurt someone. Some will even brag about how they hurt someone. I don't think it was your fault. Things just happen sometimes. Maybe he should have tapped and caused his own injury? Anyway, I just gained a lot of respect for you. Too many people are about winning at all costs. Unless you are defending your life or the life of another, winning is rarely worth "All Costs".

Thank you brother. Those kind words mean a lot to me. I love competition and I love the thrill of victory but more than that I love BJJ and as a result of that I love people who do BJJ. The last thing I want to see is someone who shares the same passion that I have for our sport get injured and have to sit out for 6-9 months! In the Midwest there are not a lot of guys at the higher belt levels so all of us that compete often know each other and have known each other for years. Friendly rivalries are still in the end friendships and who wants to see a friend get hurt?

It's hard to see how it happened but I think you bent his leg at an angle his knee wouldn't turn in when you went for the electric chair. Freak accident I think. These things happen even just passing half guard when there's a lot of resistance especially in competition.

If someone hurts their knee in lockdown it's usually their own fault for turning to the wrong direction. It's nasty when it happens, but the guy on top should know better than to forcefully turn against it. It's not your fault, every one should be concerned about their own safety in a match.

He jacked his knee out when you had him in full electric chair extension. Either give up top position or tap at this point. No one well-versed in the electric chair is getting their leg out by beasting it like that. He won his battle. Don't feel bad. These things happen, and competition blurs the lines of our willingness to concede victories. He was at such a point, and chose his fight.

That sucks man, hate seeing people get hurt. I've had a couple guys come to the gym that have gone kinda berserk during electric chairs and tweaked their knees, one in particular who like yelled in pain and I let it go, scared the crap out of me, it can happen pretty fast. Nothing you could have done really, just a risk that can happen if someone fights the sweep super hard. Hopefully dude has a speedy recovery.

It's certainly not the first knee injury from an EC. You were obviously not being an asshole or doing anything unsportsmanlike. Like someone else said his approach of trying to beast out of it seems to be what got him hurt. Sucks, but I don't think you did anything wrong.

It actually looks like you let him out of it. Was that your sense of it?
