Sanshou

The family and I are thinking about switching gyms. the one we are at now is a traditional BJJ only. There is another gym that is run by an assistant head coach of the US National Sanshou team. He has sanshou, Gi and nogi classes. I like the fact that there are dedicated days to the nogi. The gym looks good but I just thought I might ask if any of you had any previous expercience with Sanshou stand up? Is it practical in real world situations and in MMA?

absolutely. Sanshou was developed with full contact in mind and is useful in mma because it takes the practical aspects out of kung fu and simplified some more complex aesthetic properties to make it easier to absorb. Cung Le has whooped some serious ass using Sanshou and the throws you learn will definitely give you some perspective on weight distribution and body manipulation.

In addition that was just the first cung le video I clicked on, there are a ridiculous amount of awesome san shou / sanda videos out there. Sounds like a legit sanshou instructor, I would jump on the chance to learn there.

Another fighter I wish was in the UFC back when he was fighting. Kung Le has my favorite all around kickwork in MMA. Anyone know the name of the lead leg hopping sidekick he used as much, if not more than, his jab? That thing is BEAST.

That kick looks like it had almost 0 torque on it making me think that a lot of the power came from the little hop forward. His setup for it looks like it has 0 telegraph on it too. <3 it.
