on the newest mts episode, eddie mentions durring his narration of rolling with the guy in the green shirt that he was a ice hockey player and that helped with his tpjj game. as a former hockey player i intuitivly thought this was true also but havent been able to find any info about the relationship between ice hockey and jiu jitsu. i was just wondering if anbody could shed some light on this topic...
I'm guessing it has to do with the core strength needed to maintain balance while you play. Your core, whether you know it or not, is always engaged while you're skating just to keep you standing. That's not including skating around and doing everything else. Core strength and great balance are great for BJJ.
I'm the guy in the green shirt. I've been playing hockey my whole life, and it truly has helped me with explosive power and raw athleticism. Body positioning is one thing that will take time to get used to because obviously someone who has grappled before will have the upper hand on you. Yet my base seems to be pretty good and that has to have been from taking repeated hits on the ice and keeping my balance. But the ability to think quickly and ahead of the opponent is something that a hockey player is all too familiar with. Once you've got some body awareness, it'll all start to click. Basically the overall will to compete will always be there, and the explosive power and raw athleticism will shine through. My only downfall is tight hips from skating and Having to consistently work my flexibility harder than most to even attempt rubber guard. But I recommend 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, Because to me the movements in hockey are very finite and limited, whereas in jiu jitsu there is no limit to what you can do and what you cant. Just give it a try you really have nothing to lose.
Well said John. I have a handful of hockey players at the gym that competed at high levels of competition. A couple of these guys played and trained at a level close to the big show. Like any athlete that has competed at that level they know what is takes to be a champion and what it takes in training to get there. John is a unique athlete that was brought in to fight on the ice. If you want to peak into his world watch the movie Goon or Google hockey fights with his name and you will see what this monster is capable of. Although John is going to school to be a Doctor so his intellect is superior to most I have encountered.

I completely agree with this. I think its just an obscure way of looking at a crossover sport. Most people would say Breakdancing/BBoys or Gymnastics will crossover, I think hockey does translate well though in a good way.Quote:

think about it, on sportscenter when an athlete from another sport gets hurt, and then returns into the game after the injury, the announcer always jokes "he's tough, he's a hockey player" showing that its a well accepted fact that of the 'traditional' team sports, hockey players are amongst the most mentally and phyically tough. to me that mental toughness one gets from playing years of ice hockey, translates perfect to the mental toughness and patience one needs for jiu jitsu.
They get insane thigh musculature and balance. :) I have a friend that did hockey first and traditional jiu jitsu afterwards. He doesn't even show up at the gym, but he's still a handful. I can get him in top control fairly easy, but going for his legs is pure hell for some reason, hehe! Well, I'd say balance and leg strength.. And sure, toughness as well! Won't be starting Hockey tho..
I think any medium to high level athlete can take something from there sport and apply it to bjj.
Agreed, I think that playing any sport at a relative high competitive level not only gives you the competitive mindset, but you've probably trained pretty hard and have built up some sort of speed, agility, power to give you the upper hand in any situationQuote:

Anything that you have excelled at previously translates, I believe.
For instance, I view almost everything in jiu jitsu through a musical filter, because that was the first thing I truly excelled at. Timing, pace, an obsession with minutiae; these things come more easily for me than for most because they are essential for any level of mastery with an instrument. However, athletic movements, explosion, aggression, and the need to compete are things I have to manufacture artificially. Jiu Jitsu is giving and taking; war and peace; aggression and passiveness; ying and yang. We all have to find a way to strike harmony and balance in our own training and, consequently, our own lives to begin to breech the true depths of the art. We must be both Martial and Artist. Jiu Jitsu is both deeply personal and universal all at once. It's beautiful.
So yeah, hockey translates directly.
Leg kicks have a profound effect on Hockey players or anyone for that matter that doesn't condition their legs for impact.Quote:

I think if you have played any sport, you are just more "in touch" with how your body moves if any of you know what I mean.
