Fight Night, my first fight

This will be my first MMA fight I have ever been in. My boxing is rusty, I can still punch good but my movement and striking cardio is not nearly as good as my grappling at the moment.

The guy I am going against is an old sparring partner of mine and friend and it worries me a little because we agreed not to full blast strike each other, but I realize he wouldn't be fighting if he didn't want a win. I am going to honor the friendship, however very cautious so I can defend a full blast strike. This would mean that it's on and I don't have to hold back, but it still worries me if he catches me off guard and capitalizes!

I know he thinks I will play my usual passive style, but I will try to throw him off and be the aggressor instead of the counter fighter. I plan on standing with him for about a minute before going for takedowns. He is a black belt in something similar to hapkido, so his kicking is a lot better than mine, but my boxing is better than his and we both have good exchanges against each others style. We have similar ground skills, but I have the edge on the ground as long as I don't go to my comfort zone on bottom and get stuck in a passive style eating punches.

The first three highlights are me (1 working on a triangle/armtrap; 2 eating some ground n pound which lead to a low single not included in the highlight reel :p ; 3 the result of the low single me on top

I plan on repping a 10th planet shirt to the fight before and after :)

first of all, you don't make agreements to not full blast strike each other in an mma fight, its setting up for failure, second of all have fun and hit an electric chair :)

Well that's what I get for being a gentleman as well as a fighter lol :p I dont want to be the first to break the agreement

honestly dude, tell him to go hard and you go hard, its a fight and you can still be friends after, im telling you it isnt easy pulling punches

By the way, its not through an organization, it's a toughman contest or something similar to that.

I plan on taking it to the ground where it won't matter as much. I honestly don't care if he goes hard, I'm just going to feel it out. If he tries any fuckery I will be prepared. Thanks for the advice, I will be cautious and try to control the fight so he won't have an opportunity to plant his feet and bang.

A fight is a fight. Boom. Sucks its against an old sparring partner, but I'm sure you've both developed since then.

If you watch the promo you will see it's not a normal event. It's more of a toughman contest where you challenge other people to a fight, not really a sanctioned 100% legit amateur setting. He wanted an MMA fight and recommended that we fight each other or his other friend because we are the closest experience level to him. I agreed to the fight under the notion that we won't go full blast, but I have realized with time preparing for it that he wouldn't fight if he didn't want to win so I gotta bring it too. I have a good feeling about the plan I am going in there with, but ya never know :p

Pretty awkward situation. Would make a good episode for a reality show. Of course if it was a reality show one of you would have to break the no hard hitting agreement to become the villain. Causing tons of drama and a rivalry to last the rest of the show season. Would also help ratings if you were dating your old sparring partners ex girl friend that is pregnant with his baby :)

Can you let me know what diseases they test you for? I have an ongoing debate regarding whether or not these events test for hepatitis.

We have a similar thing here called "so you wanna fight". They dont use the unified rules of mma (30sec stand up rule ect)

I dont see a problem fighting your friend but the idea of a gentleman's agreement to pull your punches seems unrealistic. If this was going to be counted on your amatur recoord then I think its wrong to do anything but fight to win.

Yeah I thought it was going to be more of a practice fight sort of deal at first and then my coach caught wind from his sources who said his camp thinks I am going to play my usual passive/counter game and that he thinks it'll be a good debut showing for him. It kinda surprised me because he's been a really nice guy and can't see him trying to pull one on me, but if coaches are telling him to smash me I bet that's what he'll try to do. Pulling punches wasn't really the agreement, we just wouldn't use 100%, like 60-90% which can still be pretty hard, but not as damaging. I just don't wanna be the one at 70% then surprised by a 100% flurry or something of the sort. I anticipate I would be able to defend, but there is still a chance of anything being caught offguard.

I haven't been told I am required to test for anything by the way.

Jesus sounds crazy. A small square cage with one wrasslin mat. If I were you I'd just get after him and lay him out, grab some beers after and pick up where you left off. It's kind of interesting seeing something like this go down. Where is the fight located?

It's going to be in Novi, MI. I thought it looked pretty wild too! I feel it would be like fighting in a dog cage. Yeah it's defiantly an added stress to the fight itself because I know I have to have my head right for it. Any other fight I would go in there wanting to try to do some damage, but not this one. It sucks because I know if he catches me off guard in a bad spot I could be put away, but that's worst case scenario.

I think of it like this, Im tough, I can take the punches, I know the risks that Im talking, I also know that major injuries can sometimes but rarely occur. So when we spar boxing (which at our gym is 60-90%, different for other sparing we do), I give my partners respect by assuming that they are physically and mentally tough enough to take whats coming. So far were all still friends, friends with perpetually tender noses and headaches but friends.:)

What Im saying is; you dont require mercy cause your a tough mofo right? Assume the same for your friend and give em your best fight. My opinion.

Interesting take one it, never thought about it that way. It makes sense though :)

I wasn't going to not fight, I just was going to use Nick Diaz-esk boxing instead of Bas Rutten strikes and if it got ugly tap into my power. I was going to try to use pepper shots unless he was going harder and it was difficult to deal with while not going hard myself. I usually box Nick Diaz style (power wise and volume wise), but I can throw a really hard punch with either hand. I just don't want to tap into that power unless I feel it is necessary (if he goes hard.) Nick Diaz beats people without throwing haymaker after haymaker, he just uses volume punching very well. He turns it up and digs into his opponent when he needs/wants to.

Either way I still do not wish to harm my friend. A choke would be the preferred method stoppage, but I don't count on anything to go as planned. I just want this fight over with because it is a lot more stressful with all the conflicting emotions rather than what I wanted in my first fight or two: "hell yeah! I'm going to go Bas Rutten over this mo fo!" :)

You guys should just agree to slap each other, but go full out. Would make for an interesting fight.
