I'm very nervous about starting jiu jitsu.

As soon as i get a job i really would like to start jiu jitsu but i'm so nervous about starting. Its not that i'm affraid of the people there i'm just very bad with being around new people. I'm over weight and i would love to train jiu jitsu to lose weight but i always think people are talking crap about me. what if i go and i can't do more then ten push ups? and i see girls busting out 100 push ups. that will ruin me. Any advice?

I posted a thread about this a couple months ago but i think i'm really just looking for motivation.

Yeah man. I remember that thread. It doesn't matter where you start, just where you're headed. Most people that I have encountered while training are super positive and supportive. I think it would help you out. I can honestly say that training has changed my life for the better.

    all the best brother

also being smart can be far more important and useful in jiu jitsu than being strong or fit

Dude basically being overweight took all of your self confidence away from you. Almost all of the shit talking that you think others do are in your head only. To be real, nobody really gives a fuck about you even if you are 150 pounds or 300. Everybody has their own lives to worry about so if your name is not Jessica Simpson or Oprah Winfrey, you being fat does not really concern, bother or take place in anybody's conversation. You need to suck up and realize that your fears are being created in your brain only.
I'll give you an example, when I was a kid, I was scared of Vampires. Only vampires, not Freddy, not Jason, not monsters or any type of serial killers. Just vampires. I was so scared that I would have trouble going inside a dark room, or be alone in the house. I never said this to any of my friends or family because I did not want them to think that I was a pussy. Over couple years this fear of vampires started to make my life somewhat uncomfortable, my mom wondered why I kept on trying to talk to her all though I was 2 rooms over etc.. ( I was thinking if I am talking to my mom and a vampire got me, my sentence would get cut in half and she will realize that something wrong)... Anyways, after a while my fear turned to anger. I was really fucking upset at vampires for making me feel like a pussy, one day I was alone at home I walked in a dark room and started screaming. "Fuck you mother fucker, come out and fight you bitch, its you and me , right here right now!!!" I'd like to remind you I was around 7 or 8 at the time. After swinging a couple punches in the air, I felt a big load come off my shoulders. There was nobody around. I was comfortable, finally. Sometimes still to this day, when I walk in a dark room and obviously no vampires attack me, I smile to myself and say " Thats right bitch, stay in the shadows or I'll fuck you up"
Moral of the story, if you can turn your fears and tears to anger and madness, it works out pretty good.

So I was 114 pounds and 5 10 when I started jits. And yes there were girls stronger than me there that could do more push-ups and whatever else. If you want to be successful in jiujitsu, you have to let all that stuff go (I’m worried that person X in better at thing X than I am). Good news, jiujitsu will change your whole mentality. Bad news, someone (even a girl) doing more push-ups than you is not EVEN CLOSE to the most humbling thing that will happen to you. That would be the case even if you were an exceptional athlete, so I say give it a shot. If you stick to it, it will help you with WAY more than losing weight

Meeting new people can very worrying but the thing is life isn't always comfortable so just accept it and embrace it. Get out of your comfort zone because although your comfort zone is what you know it has left you overweight and with low self esteem. Sure you're going to be nervous but do it anyway because this is going to benefit you so much. Cut your nails, wash yourself and your training equipment and no one is going to care about anything else man.

Sage, if Palm Bay is close to ya link up with Sean Marshal. He is on here quite a bit. He is a super nice dude and will help you any way he can. There have been tons of peeps that got into jitz to lose weight and become amazing jitz players. Its time for you to go and get yours. Good luck, and as my boy Kiko said, the Miami HB is here if you are ever down in our area.
