So they don't break people into groups based on belt rank, instead based on time spent training?

They do for NAGA No GI. I think the reasoning is that you will get wrestlers or sambo guys that have like 5 years of experience but are a white belt in jiu jitsu and they dont want them competing against a 5 month jiu jitsu white belt, ya know?

They do their GI division IBJJF style so that's belt based

Thanks for the clarification. That's kind of what I was talking about: Your example of Sambo/Wrestling competitors who would enter as white belts in JJ tourneys.
That kind of stuff has been going on forever. (Unfortunately)

Higher ranked players need not worry, but the lower ranked player can suffer.
