I'm not into weight lifting or body building, but we do a pretty intensive warmup, so I figure the protein will help.
If you don't have access to quality whole foods immediately following a workout (30 mins or so when insulin sensitivity is highest), then a protein shake could be a good option, especially if you're doing any kind of anaerobic stuff during the workout (pushups, air squats, situps, etc.) that tears muscle fiber more significantly than shots, sprawls and such.
Whey varies widely in quality, and a lot of it is pure trash for the body. Dr. Mercola does a presentation on this and talks about the heavy metals, sweeteners and residual hormones most whey contains from NON grass fed cows (and then proceeds to sell you his brand :-P - I vouch for it though) -

You might also be able to find a local grass fed, cold processed whey concentrate (never isolate!) if you have a health food store around you that stocks such things.
