Ralek Gracie to fight Garry Tonon

Do a lot of people call grappling events fights? I'm not really cool with that. I was thrown off at first mostly because as I understand it Mr. Ralek Gracie is batshit insane and probably WOULD fight someone as scary as Tonon.

Seriously though grapple, roll, face, match, vs, anything but fight. It's not exactly a fight without strikes.

Question: if some guy came up to you and spit in your face and then you took him down and choked him unconscious, did you or did you not get into a fight?

The spitter would be trying to throw punches or elbows or bite or whatever else though right?. I would probably say you neutralized him before there was a fight.

I hate debating semantics though... If it's common in the BJJ community to call grappling events fights I won't talk shit. That's why I asked. Still fairly new to the game.

Now that I think about it I do absolutely love the "superfights" you put on hehe and it's awesome in that context

Exhibit A: BJ Penn's first book on Mixed Martial Arts. When citing why he grew to love competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he spoke of how even if punches and kicks aren't thrown, the adrenaline rush and real-time intensity made jiu jitsu competition 'a fight.' You can tinker with the rules, but it's still a fight. An argument one could make is that Metamoris is not vale-tudo, which is unquestionably one of the more 'no-holds-barred' i.e. 'purist' type of rule sets when it comes to fights. At the end of the day though, a fight is a fight.

What do you call 2 guys boxing or kickboxing? Same limited rule set at grappling, only different ends of the combat spectrum.

I've never thought BJJ matches should be called fights, but now you've put it like that, I think I'll have to change my opinion.
