Carlson's guys are definitely more hard style heavy pressure than many schools I have visited. The only other schools that exert their kind of pressure I have seen are Rickson black belt schools. If by more gi, you mean utilizing gi grips, sure.
I have carlsons book, its mostly techniques that utilize the gi. Its called experts only and from what ive seen he is more of a gi/competition mma fighter. He doesnt have a million kids like the helio line so i think his style is on the way of dying im from chicago too and most schools are carlson.

Carlson was also the family champion for 30 years and he intermingled with Luta Livre guys in Brazil so I by no means meant he didn't know what was up in a fight with or without a gi. I don't think his style is going to die any time soon either. It is probably even more prominent than Fadda lineage.

He trained with some Luta Livre guys who were friends with Rolls. I cannot remember the exact account off hand, but I remember a Luta Livre guy telling his grappling background story and it started off with him as a Carlson Gracie student and he was turned on to Luta Livre after training with Luta Livre guys at Carlson's gym who was friends with Rolls. Rolls cross trained in all sorts of grappling styles so this account seemed reasonable to me. I will try to dig it up when I am less sleepy.
