What do you require from your students in order to promote them?

i know with Master Eddies online promotions, he requires X number of wins on camera reppin 10th and an unedited video of everything you know.

I don't know if it has been brought up before but perhaps there could be a syllabus for belt levels so white belts know they should be focusing on moves in the realm of basic half guard and RG before really trying to hit a sorcerer or some insane Genki Sudo style flying leg locks?

By the time you win 10 matches at blue belt/intermediate level you should be about ready. It'll be a while before you do so don't rush it just continue to train on a regular basis and keep learning and you'll be there. It's not about belts.

The thing that's cool about Jiu-jitsu is that you don't necessarily get belts depending on what you know or time you've put in alone. I think its a combination of both PLUS how well you can use those moves. Unlike Judo or karate or whatever where you just have to learn how to do the throw properly or learn the kata, in Jiu-Jitsu you can know how to do the whole path to the sorcerer perfectly, but that doesn't mean you can apply it properly. I think its how well you can roll, there shouldn't be a set number of moves to learn or a time you have to wait to get your belt, just train and it'll come. Then again i'm just a white belt.

I understand all that but what does that mean for mma fighters like I'm using tourneys to just see what others might be bring to the cage in my region ya know? but I'm still tryin to get my blue and planing for my first fight in spring, if I win by strikes is that a notch closer or what? just curious and playin devils advocate. I got started in jits as my plan b in the cage and just became addicted.

I guess i put out the wrong sort of vibe with my initial post.

what i was going for was more of a training plan and what i should be working on before attempting advanced positions. Belts are the only real thing that distinguish someones abilities. (or at least they are supposed to)

I could really care less what belt i am. what good is it being a brown belt when you struggle while rolling against newbies? it would be retarded tho if someone in my situation who cant attend a gym and can only go to seminars here and there could hit a sorcerer like a pro but cant pass a closed guard because of lack of guidance.

Also being in the Marine Corps we have a program called MCMAP and it spells out what you should know before you can advance your belt level. structure and guidance are what im gettin at

For all my white belts, I have the following general guidline (bearing in mind, I think I'm fairly old school and strict):
know how to fall properly
3 throws (for examply: hip toss, outside trip, single leg takedown)
takedown defense
Bridge/shrimp drill
2 mount escapes
2 guard passes
seatbelt/over-under control
rear naked choke
primary/fundamental rubber guard path
3 subs from RG
3 sweeps from RG
Mount control and armbar from mount
intro twister side control
intro live rolling
Now, bear in mind there will be some variance for the individual. For instance, if a student has a lifetime of wrestling and wrestled at the collegiate level, they may progress faster or be able to roll at a higher level. Dedication is also a factor. And this is just basic white to blue. It doesn't include my Thai Boxing, JKD or MMA stuff. Again, any curriculum is a guideline and a base or gauge. People can go to every GQ or NAGA but still not know how to properly execute an arm bar or choke, or do a proper takedown or know how to fall properly. This would be a good starting point and help you focus on some basics of all areas-10th Planet, wrestling, etc. There's a lot more.
