    Cardio question..

i have 2 months until the arnold's and i was wanting to know the best way to improve your cardio for jiujitsu. I assume rolling is the best but i dont always have someone to roll with.. so will running and jump rope work? or will that just mean i can run for a long time and still get gassed when i roll? i know literally nothing about cardio. Ive never even bothered until my last tournament. i just assumed i wouldnt get tired via magic.. but apparently magic wasnt allowed at that one because i was dead tired by the last match. and i know the arnolds are bigger than the OGC. so anyone have any tips? or is running sufficient?

i would suggest some HIIT (high intensity interval training) take a look online for some simple HIIT workouts, theyve really helped my cardio go from rubbish to okay, especially when you suddenly change from light rolling to hard in one move also try some circuit training if you want, the prolonged effort really gets your heart pumping hard for a while, which is what happens a lot when you fight.

Chronic, running is okay, if you are doing bleachers, uphill sprints, or suicides. Swimming is way better for your cardio (IMO) for bjj tho. There are many ways to train tourney specific cardio and endurance. Where are you at in Ohio? I will be at the Arnolds too! So we will have to meet up.

Cardio based workouts, for me i do long distance running or feet to floor matches. I'm getting ready for a pride tournament myself, so ive been training normal classes 5 days a week and doing three days a week of feet to floor matches. Five minute matches with a 2 min break at most inbetween. I have the pleasure of rolling with alot of purple belts and a brown so they make sure they keep a good pace.

Has anyone noticed if you turn OGC 90* clockwise, it looks like a guy jackin the hammer. lol As for cardio one of the best things that i've found are jump squats, some people call them burpies. to do ONE you drop and do a push-up, and then stand up and jump as high as you can. 50 of them will put you in ur place usually.

any Cardio for duration helps. Running and jumping rope are to make you light on your feet and give you great recovery during "slow downs" in the action. For actual grappling cardio, the best things to do are positional drills, where you are in bad positions over and over against good people. IME, the time to need cardio is more when you the nail, than when you are swinging the hammer. Positional drills, takedowns, takedown to submission with shark tank type rounds, is by far, the best conditioning for grappling competition. Running, should be done as a supplement, not so much for "fight" endurance, but for "slow down" recovery, recovery between matches, and to keep you light on the feet.
