As for passing guard... it's hard and will get better with loads of repitition , drilling and rolling. It just takes time so be patient. As for opening a closed guard , I never do , I just keep tight with good posture and wait for them to open. There is very little they can do from full guard so dont waste your energy trying to open.

Standing up is huge, took me a while to figure that out. I'm horrible at passing from scratch so like others have said I try to avoid being there in the first place. I'd much rather sweep and pass at the same time then being in someone's guard trying to break open their guard and pass. It all depends on how your opponent likes to play guard too. I have the hardest time breaking open my opponents closed guard so for me personally that's what I try to avoid. If they like to play open and loose I can deal with that and i am ok at passing in those situations. For me the thing that has helped the most from this position is developing a few good submissions that I am confident/comfortable with from my opponents guard. I am always looking for Ezekiel chokes when I'm in someone's guard (especially if I'm wrlearing the gi) and I'm always thinking about transitioning into leg locks (usually I go into an ankle lock position and see where that takes me depending on what my opponent does to defend.) Just having a few submissions from there, even if they arent super high percentage, can throw your opponents game off and gives you confidence in the sense that you actually have a weapon from a position that you're not great in.
