In fighting through what appeared to be a badly injured elbow in addition to a potentially torn MCL in his knee, Conor Heun has unsurprisingly drawn the most serious medical suspension arising from this past Saturday's "Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum" event.
The Texas Department of Licensing recently released the terms of each of the event's competitors. A review on whether to reveal the causes of the suspensions is currently underway following an official request by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
Heun's injuries were confirmed today by his manager, Bryan Hamper of Blue Chip Management, though an MRI will determine the extent of his elbow injury. Nevertheless, the fighter is benched for the remainder of the summer.
The second most serious suspension was handed down to Justin Wilcox, who fought Gesias Cavalcante on the event's preliminary card. He was unintentionally poked in the eye at the start of the bout's second round, and the bout was ruled a "no decision."
Event headliners Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum escaped with mandatory 10-day suspensions per the TDLR's report. In fact, the majority of competitors received the same term.
However, Rafael Cordero, Werdum's trainer at King's MMA, said today that the submission specialist's knee was "blown" during the headlining fight and is seeing a doctor next week to determine the extent of the damage.
"They need to have one more fight," he said. "They didn't have a fight."
That sentiment is shared by most who saw the bout, which aired live on Showtime and took place at American Airlines Center in Dallas. Since then, Strikeforce heavyweight champ Overeem and upset artist Werdum have pointed the finger at each other for the lackluster showing.
The terms of suspensions for "Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum" are as follows:
