What are the differences between different side controls?

I noticed there's some differences between wrestling side control (1 arm around head, 1 around leg), twister side control, judo side control and regular. Like it's easier to mount and north/south choke from twister control but not able to mount from judo side control. Anyone know the differences? Is one better than the other?

I think that you really need to know all 3 to maximize your ability to stay on top of an active opponent that is constantly scrambling to escape. Each type of side control has unique setups to submissions that your opponent may be susceptible to so it's best to just learn them all.

Personally, nothing is more fun for me than successfully transitioning to the truck from twister side control. The truck is a better kill-zone for me than the back so I really want to develop this transition. For this reason I always try to take twister side control when given the opportunity. And while I've only hit the twister roll a few times so far - I'm getting better & better at keeping top twister side control while I hunt for the leg.

I think its good to at least be able to transition between between each one but whether a position is good for you all depends on how much time/repitition you put into the position. The more time you put into it the closer it is to becoming a dead zone. So one isnt better than the other.

I can't pass someone's guard. That's how much my BJJ sucks lol. I always get mounted and choked out, it's so frustrating.

Takes time to get good at guard passing, I'm just barely starting to make some gains myself. Keep at it, and being stuck in guard is better then being mounted or Side Controlled...

Rubber guard was designed to be a really hard position get free from, as well as the Lock Down. Where you really see your game improve is when you start drilling guard passes. If you can just flow through people's guards and attack you'll be a beast. That's how Marcelo rolls. Just be patient, put in the reps and then put in more reps. They say you have to do something 1,000 times for it to become muscle memory, so it really is just doing and waiting for your body to get used to the movements. I write down on a notepad where I feel like I am improving and where I still have holes, it really helps me. In being a white belt you just have to hone the basics and above all else survive. Blue and Purple is when attacking and offense really start becoming a factor. Breathe, slow, down, think and above all else don't be your own worst critic on the mat. It'll come together.

I try to survive but it's so hard because I'm like the newest member of 10th planet and other guys know way more techniques than me. But i do get your point, although i think I'm horrible for a person who trained for 2 months and a half of Jitz, lol. I like rolling with white belts though, it gives me an opportunity to use the techniques I learned.

Even Eddie says it takes three months man to start feel yourself getting it. Talk with the person you're rolling with before you start and tell them hey I am having difficulty and I really want to work these positions, 9 times out of 10 they will be down to help you improve. Just except the fact your the greenest guy there and that you are learning. And if you don't survive so what? It's just practice, I have been choked out in State Championship matches in Judo and competed 10 minutes later after that. Everyone taps. Eventually you'll see the mistakes you're making and find a way to correct them. Don't be your worst enemy and let your ego go. I used to get killed and I am like ok I gotta survive against this guy for 3 minutes and I only make it 39 seconds my first time, then I make it 55 and then 2 minutes...so forth and so on. Small victories man, but improvement nonetheless.

Should i work on my defense then? It's better than my offense but I still get tossed around and choked.
