Southern Tier Marital Arts Tournament Video - 4 matches, 3 subs, 2nd place

    Hey Nibiru nation:

I just competed in the 1st Southern Tier Martial Arts Tournament & Expo in Jamestown, NY. I had 4 matches, won 3 by submission (Electric Chair, RNC & Gator Roll to D'Arce). I took 2nd place.

For my 3 previous tournaments I competed Men's 30+ Novice @190lbs. This time I competed Men's 18+ Intermediate @170lbs. This was my 1st weight-cut & it went great! I dieted down from 190 to 175 & cut the last 5 by fasting & sitting in the sauna. I was back to 175 by the time I got onto the mats.

Note: my camera person was late so I am out of frame for my 1st submission. Also, the camera person may or may not have epilepsy...I'm not sure.

Please give feedback on my technique. Below are my notes.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All matches - my TDs & TD defense is awful! I have some serious work to do here. I lost the take-down battle in 4/4 matches - I salvaged some type of guard 3/4 times but still...not good.

    0:31 seconds (Match 1)
I should not have ducked my head on that single leg take down attempt. I needed to drop to a knee & kept my head up & neck strong. I put my neck in danger & was lucky to end up in 1/2 guard.

    2:20 (Match 2)
I was happy that I could work some RG for the 1st time in a tournament. I wish I would have hit a submission using RG but at least I managed a sweep to side control.

    3:21 (Match 2)
My omoplata stinks! I'll be drilling from jiu-claw to improve here.

    3:40 (Match 2)
I did a poor job maintaining side control, he rolled into me & got to his knees far too easily.

    6:45 (Match 3)
I love the anti-D'Arce sweep that Professor Jeremy Arel taught my on my April trip to Fort Mill, SC --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR90yYoddX8. Thanks Professor! It's totally $$$$!

    6:50 (Match 3)
Again, my side control was WEAK! Normally I feel good in this position but the step up in competition has shown me that I need real improvement if I hope to keep these wrestlers on their backs. Any tips based on what you see me doing wrong?

    8:50 (Match 4)
I was totally dominated start-finish in this last match by Josh Lydell. This guy was a beast (I guess he was a pro MMA fighter). He mentioned he trained at 10th Planet Rochester under the ZOG for a year at some point in the past.

I guess I needed to fight his grip & explode to my knees before he locks the N/S choke up. I didn't appear to do much because I quickly felt too locked in to escape & hoped I could wait it out if I stayed calm & conserved air. As it turns out - I could not & my attempt to explode out at the end was not nearly strong enough. Does anyone have any survival tips if I get caught here again?

Here is my to-do list of stuff I need to drill. What else should I add on?

    1. TDs, TD defense & pulling guard or 1/2 guard (for when I know I'm beat on my feet).
    2. Hold top side control / keep opponent flat on their back.
    3. Jiu-claw to finish omoplata or at least transition to a dominant side control.
    4. Prevent N/S choke when top transitions from side to N/S...somehow.
    5. Escapes from N/S? - Really my whole N/S game sucks top & bottom. I need help here.

Ahhh yes Josh, he is a beast, he trained with us for a year, and than on/off after that. He actually messaged me a few weeks ago and asked if we had anyone competing at that tourney and in that division, when I told him "no", hes said "good I have a shot at winning" Theres no shame in loosing to Josh he's a stud.

As for the N/S choke never turn away, always turn into it. He wants to turn your chin away from him to isolate the neck and finish the choke.
