Sup guys...

I have a buddy i roll with nearly everyday. He is a second degree judo blackbelt. also an ex national champ. so really high level Judoka. My problem is the following- if he gets me to kesagetame i am in trouble. any where else and i tap him relatively easily. i have tried every escape i can find on the net, books etc but he adapts to all of them... pretty much seen em all he says. my higher ranked friends on this site please help me out a wee bit. its frustrating as hell to be pinned the whole time.

I am very flexible and tall as hell just for the record, so ANY escapes i will try!

Jip, even tried "the judo". his pin is insane. i have never felt a jiu jitsu side that controlling. he also as a black belt has the ability to alter very slightly to adjust to my movement. but only in Kesa! not anywhere else!lol

Ha ha i had that problem when i first started as well.... Kesagatame is the "scarf hold". its most judoka's strongest form of side control.

Rather than just using a move, you should also focus on the dynamics of the kesa gatame (scarf hold) paying attention to what your opponent is trying to achieve from the position. One objective for your opponent is to pin you flat to the mat with his body pressure, killing your hips and preventing you from turning in. His other objective is to isolate your bottom arm, exposing it for various submissions.

When I get pinned under kesa gatame, before I go to any escape my first goal is protect my bottom arm from being isolated. I usually do this by hiding my elbow underneath my opponent's body. Usually, this move is done during the transition or else it turns into a hand fight. Once the elbow is underneath I am momentarily safe and free to choose an escape...

1) If he is using standard kesa gatame I can take his back or go to the twister, by hooking his far leg. In order to do this though I must frame/cross face his head back with my free arm. Once his head his pushed upward, it exposes his rear leg and gives me space to hook the leg.

2) If when going for the foot hook he pulls his leg in, then his weight could be set too high. At that moment I can gable grip around his body, arch my back and roll him to the opposite side and into side mount. For many people, they also momentarily set their weight too high when they first enter Kesa Gatame, if you drill it right, there's an opportunity for a reversal there as well.

3) My last ditch move though is to just shove their head back with my forearm and then scissor lock their head with your knees, peeling them back and off of you. There's also an arm bar there. For some reason, I was able to pull this one off on a Judo black belt, it can sometimes be the ugliest and spazziest way out of the position.

There's other ways out, but those are my bread and butter options.

Will show you the twister setup from scarve hold. I hate being in it as well, the lockdown to tie up the leg is a bit different, but with the same result. We can drill it Friday

The Chess Master recommends pawn to e4............you move your pawn to e4, black responds by moving his pawn to c5, you move your knight to f3, black responds with pawn to d6, you move your pawn to d4. Black responds with pawn takes pawn. Knight takes pawn. As a result of this line your control of the center is a slightly increased, also blacks development is behind.

If you're able to keep the near arm from being trapped you can use the Ghost. That's one of Coach's money escapes from side control and it works REALLY well -- often even on guys who know it. It's one of my all-time favorite moves and I use it regularly. He's got video of it on YouTube and prolly somewhere on the forum.
