Ah....another night going home with gi burn on my face!

I roll at an MMA school and there is this Gracie guy that rolls with a gi.
How do you tell a Gracie trained guy that he needs to lose the gi?
The kicker is that he trains MMA, but he only wears the gi for grappling!

Now my face looks fucked!

The debate that Gi makes you a better grappler because it is harder to escape when someone can grab you. Well I will say that training No Gi is harder because of the sweat makes it easier to escape, so it’s harder to hold someone down and submit them. You have to learn to be tighter for No Gi & MMA because of the sweat factor. Is the glass half empty or half full? You guys can decide.

If he train MMA....You train how you fight. No Gi!!!!

I prefer No Gi but there are a lot of positives in training in Gi. It's way more difficult to pass and to escape submissions. You can't just slip out of arm bars, triangles, half guard, etc. It forces you to slow down and be more technical.

Do the Gracies have to get steel wool variety to sell to their students though?
Can't they make a smooth version.
Seems to make sense... keeping your opponent from being able to grab your gi.

Hang drying the gi makes them feel like sandpaper..or so I'm told.

TBH I myself like gi and no-gi equally (as i am sure many here do). However i do not do MMA. If i did i would likely drop the Gi immediately. Some guys just like the Gi, and the tradition etc etc. No point in trying to change their minds. You end up looking like the narrow-minded one. Just let things happen organically. If they want to go strictly no-gi then they will, in time. The system will speak for itself IMO. :-)

I don't see my advantage if I'm studying and training in no gi. I'm not grabbing his gi, because I'm not trained to.
If were following gi rules, then I would. I'm just no comfortable starting bad habits because one guy wears a gi to a no gi class.
