    Bartitsu?

I was searching JuJitsu and I came across this art.

    Bartitsu
Jujutsu was first introduced to Europe in 1898 by Edward William Barton-Wright, who had studied Tenjin Shinyō-ryū and Shinden Fudo Ryu in Yokohama and Kobe, respectively. He had also trained briefly at the Kodokan in Tokyo. Upon returning to England he folded the basics of all of these styles, as well as boxing, savate and French stick fighting, into an eclectic self-defence system called Bartitsu[9].

Is it just me or does this name instantly remind you of the Rick James at the China Club skit on The Chappelle Show?

Jesse its funny you bring that up I remember reading a book about it about 10 years ago. The book had all these old b/w photos with guys demonstrating techniques in full suits and derby hats with handle bar mustaches, pure awesome.

From what I could gather, some British dude tried to steal Judo's thunder by co-opting two Judokas and adding his own cane fighting to his modified grappling style. The Judokas got wise, revolted and later established a real Kodokan presence in Europe.

Thant pictures is a hoot! I can't wait till I have a chance to sign-up for the next 10th planet bartitsu seminar!

BTW (for anyone interested): In the Arthur Conan Doyle novels, Sherlock Holmes studied and was a master of Bartitsu.

Barton-Wright can be commended not only for being one of the earliest European students on Jiujitsu and Judo, but for creating an early MMA school... he did study and incorporate kicking techniques from Savate, punching from Western Boxing, rough and tumble wrestling, and English Walking Stick Fighting along with his jits/judo grappling. His school was immensely popular with Upper-class English Gentlemen who wished to learn to defend themselves from the hooligans, scalliwags and rapskallions of the day (in modern words, defending themselves from the average member of this forum :-)

Yukio Tani was the head Judo coach at Barton's gym.

A really incredible figure, having won numerous challenge matches against most of the region's grapplers. You should google his name when you're bored.
