    Cutting small amounts of weight

Rolling at the submission only tournament at 10th Planet Indy this weekend. Never cut weight before, and I need to lose ~5lbs and while I know that's not a lot I have no idea what i'm doing. Any tips on how to lose that little nugget of weight? My plan now is just to not eat thursday night/friday morning and do a circuit in a plastic suit before we head up there. Any advice is appreciated.

The rule for cutting a small amount of weight (5-10 lbs):

The night before the weigh-ins you stop eating and drinking.
Check your weight every few hours. You should lose several pounds from not eating or drinking overnight.
Only a few hours before the weigh-in, throw a plastic bag on and a sweatshirt over it and sweat out whatever is left.

Cut the weight as close to the weigh-in time as you can. The shorter amount of time you spend dehydrated, the less the dehydration will affect you. If you are only dehydrated for a few hours, the dehydration will likely not affect you. While you are cutting, stay away from saunas and hot-tubs because they sap your strength (or so my old wrestling coach used to tell me).

If you have more weight to go than 10 lbs, I would definetley try to diet down to within 10-15 lbs. It takes experience to cut more water than that because your brain can start thinking self-defeating thoughts when dehydrated.

Do this FIRST and you probably won't need to dehydrate at all.

Starting 5 days out drink 2 gallons of DISTILLED water for 3 days. ie weigh in/fight is saturday start monday, tuesday, wednesday. On thursday drop to 1 gallon and friday 1 gallon. That alone should eliminate about 5 lbs.

That will work. This weekend I helped a guy go from 170 to 160 with no sauna or dehydrating and by fight time (mma) he was 173

5 lbs for "night before weigh ins" is a piece of cake. Don't worry to much, you should be able to do that with "short term" dehydration and eating light on Friday. Two hard boiled eggs for breakfast. Small chicken breast and some carrot sticks for an early lunch(11:30) and nothing until weigh-ins. As long as your thirsty and hungry at weigh in time, you will probably make it. Just make sure you don't gain during the week!! Good luck
Last resort, I have seen guys weigh in heavy for MMA and lose 3 lbs just by going for a run around the block a few times and come back a half hour later and make weight.

I weigh between 183-185 on a given day, and I'm wanting to do the 179.9 beginner class.
