First Jiu Jitsu Tournament this weekend! Any advice appreciated!

Hi everyone! This weekend me and several others from my school will be entering the NAGA OKC tournament. Being a white belt with about 3 months of training, I'm going to be entering the novice division. I hope to do well and represent 10th P while I'm at it! Any tips or advice on what to expect? All replies are appreciated!

My first one I just stayed relaxed, I think thats what let me win, two months into training and I did teen advanced and won, and i think it was because how calm I stayed, don't get super aggressive because you may miss a detail like your head placement on a takedown and your arm placement in the guard etc. Have fun with it and what ever outcome count it as a learning experience. Try and get your matches on video and post them here for advice

Just relax, and enjoy the experience. Whether you run through everyone in your division, or lose in the first 10 seconds, try to keep calm, try your best, and realize that regardless of the outcome, your decision to compete on that day will pay dividends to your game and your mindset. Best of luck!

Do u plan to cut weight? I basically made sure to pace my training leading up to the week before my first tourney, and making sure to get sleep a couple days out and then eat healthy def that last week. At the tourney play to win but dont be too nervous or reckless, and def tap before ur opponent is forced to crank (although the refs do try to call it defensively for safety's sake).

My advice is have a blast, and go in there for first place!! you can expect a good long explanation of rules, it gets boring but pay attention if you have never competed in a point system. I competed in my first NAGA in august after about 4 months of training. I think the most surprising thing for me was that 100% grappling against a stranger is not that different that I thought it would be. Go for submissions! HerbChao was right good night sleep and eating healthy is key. I would bring snacks if you plan to stick around all day. Good luck cant wait to see videos!!!

Nerves are a good thing. "There's nothing wrong with butterflies, as long as you can get them to fly in formation". That is if you can control them and not be tense and spastic. I too am entering my first tournament in 2 weeks and will try to live by this and stay calm.. After all that's what JJ is all about.
