This is fairly variable depending on strain.
Controlling height is a common necessity but in terms of how you want to shape your plants overall, it depends on your general room plan.
Yields are usually measured in grams/watt (by growers, the seeds banks have little choice but to list per plant but they know full well it dosent mean much) so in order to achieve good yields in that sense you need to adequately fill your light footprint. Whether its better for you to do that with one monster bush or a dozen plants s.o.og. depends on a number of factors but generally tops are where its at and more plants with less veg time will give bigger yields and allow for more runs per year. I like plants with about five tops and 18-36 inches tall with 1000 watt light (if you're not doing s.o.g.)
