Hi this is Cora's dad. Thank you everyone for taking the time to share their knowledge. I'm so glad we found this site. And thanks especially to Mr. Debes. To give such advice and breaking it down the way you did must have taken much of your time. Well this weekend Cora competed in the Fight to Win Texas Open in Spring, Tx. She took 1st place in No-gi and 2nd in Gi. All of her win come by way of tap out. Actually ALL of her win since she started competing come by way of tap out. I guess I didn't train her to collect points. Anyways, the only reason why she didn't win 1st place in the Gi was that she couldn't finish the fight using the Rubber Guard. I told her to save the Rubber Guard for the toughest kid in her division, sure enough she face him in the final and she pulled a beautiful rubber guard that he couldn't get out of. She got to crack head, then double bagged, and then the triangle come. But she couldn't finish because he was holding her leg and she couldn't pry his hand out. She tried squeezing as hard as she could, but she was weaken by the flu and didn't have much strength. She's been sick the entire week prior to this fight. She was lucky to get well enough to even show up to compete. Well, she tried to readjust to get his arm out, but the kid manage to bust out of her guard and pass. So he end up winning with that pass. But everyone there know who really won that fight. You can watch this fight on our channel under MPREAP and Fight to Win. Sometimes going to every tournament has its downfall. All of the coaches know about her Triangle and they prepare their kids to defend it. This kid that she fight, well she had already tapped him out in the prior tournament with a rear naked choke and it was nasty, video of that is also available, just search for "Kids BJJ...squeeze harder than an Anaconda".... This is only her 1st month working on the Rubber Guard, I'm thinking she will be much better in a few more months, especially with yall help.

All of her matches from Fight to Win are now up on Youtube. I know yall are BJJ and fight fans so I told her to do her best and give everyone a good show and show the world that even a tiny little 9 year old asian girl have some fight in her.

Thank you once again and good night.

This is Cora's dad. Its been 6 wks now since Cora started learning the Rubber Guard and things are improving a lot. She's beginning to develop that squeezing power, believe me, I can't hardly handle it anymore when she squeeze. And when she get a really good invisible collar, I can't just power out of it anymore. We been working on tightening up all her transition points so that she keeps everything tight when transitioning. As of right now she is able to pull off submissions like, triangle, armbar, gogoplata, omoplata, and carni with no problem. Just with these submissions alone, I believe she will win most of her matches. We are basically sticking with these basic attacks for now, and trying to polish them up. She is able to break posture against the boys her size, but having problem with kids that have about 30-40 lbs on her. At the gym, she is running clinic with the rubber guard on the lower belts and I sometimes feel bad that she is using such advance moves on them.... But hey that is how this sport is because before she got to this point, the higher belt and the bigger boys have been using her as a grappling dummy. Now its her turn, right?? Sometimes even her coaches and other parents are left scratching their head as to how she comes up with all these techniques in such a short time.... Right now our focus is on NAGA in dallas on dec 16. And her goal is to go undefeated again....so she training hard for it. Over the holiday she have been training hard and today is her 1st day back at the gym, I can't wait to see her sparring session...will post it up soon.

Cora's Dad, I think it's fantastic that you are so supportive of Cora on her Jiu Jitsu journey.
I grew up in a martial arts environment and I know it was the most positive thing I could have been put into as a kid. Now that I'm a father of two girls, I have encouraged my girls to learn Jiu Jitsu as well, because BJJ is #1 for a woman to defend with against a single attacker who wants to take her to the ground and get between her legs. I'm not going to waste their time with Karate or whatever, other than teaching them effective striking.

I would encourage you to go the the online store here and buy the books if you don't have them already, because you can learn the entire base of the system from those books and add to her game as she gets more and more comfortable with rubber guard. The Eddie Bravo videos are amazing as well.

Keep supporting her. It's great to see.

Awesome to see Cora and Cora's dad out learning what works. It's that extra R&D that you do on your own that propels you to that next level, and Cora is well on her way!!

Thanks for reaching out to the forum, and yes, it would help a lot if there was a hot box in your area, like minded jiu jitsu practitioners, or 10th Planet Ronin that you can collaborate with!

This is Bruce, Cora's dad. Cora is so tired from her sparring session today that she is sound asleep already. Today she took on the biggest and best 10 year old boy in the gym. Even though he is about 45 lbs heavier than her, she gave a good fight. She threw everything except the kitchen sink at him, but he bust threw it all. She tried the rubber guard, he went threw that then she transition into a triangle, he smashed that also. He stood up and tried to smash her from the top, she did an X guard thing that look like the electric chair ( to my surprise since we haven't work on that yet) and spun out the back door which left the coach and I speechless. THen she put him in the spider guard, he smashed that also. He was ready to mount her, but she spun out again to the back and took his back for a rear naked choke instead. Of course he didn't tap out because he's so thick and big and has no neck to choke on. Needless to say Cora was so bummed out about that. But I told her she will never had to compete against anyone like him and that what she just did would have tap out anyone her size. ANd not to mention all her transitions are like that of blue belt adults....so that cheered her up some.

btw...i've been reading on here about a hot box...what is that???

Kurzy: you are a parent of girls also, so I know exactly where you are coming from. That is my greatest fear also, that something like that might happen to my daughter. I started out wanting to train her to protect herself even before we got involved with BJJ. But from the very first day that we visited her current gym, Cora wrote me a note saying " Daddy, I love this." From that day on, we train like she is a prize fighter. She train at the gym for an hour, I record every sparring session. We get home, we go over the film so we can reinforce what she did right and correct what she did wrong. After school she does her homework and whatever time we have left, we practice at home before we go to the gym. This cycle repeats for 5 days a week. ANd on the weekend, this is where I teach her new techniques and we drill and drill and then we spar. Ever since we start doing BJJ, she is more focus and getting straight A's in school. She become an honor student and spelling B champion of her school. Also before we put her in BJJ, she was in gymnastic for a year...but she can't even do a proper cartwheel. But now since she been in BJJ for 2 years now, she is like a gymnist. She is much more flexible now and she is the fastest kid in the gym. SHe is so much stronger now in every aspect. BJJ has changed our lives not just her. We do this as a family. Its not just something for Cora now, its for all of our family. Its our lifestyle. Now we don't even watch tv anymore, we just watch film of her tournaments and sparring sessions.
Look on youtube for " Cora's BJJ sparring session 112612" to see how hard she train today.

I will try to check it out tonight when I get home.

As far as I understand it, hotbox is a group of people that train specifically in the 10th planet system, learning from the books and videos and MTS episodes, but they are not an official "School".
More like a group of 10P enthusiasts that work together to master the system. It's like the beginning of a 10P school in an area that deosn't have one though.
