    Lockdown question

    Hey guys,

Ive been down to 10th Planet Melb and Frank was kind enough to teach me the lockdown and then I was lucky enough to attend the Eddie Bravo seminar in Sydney where he expanded on the lockdown...anyways..I love it and use it all the time at my gym and catch a lot of higher guys with it and Im getting a lot better at sweeping or taking the back.
Lately, however, I was rolling with one of the senior guys at the gym and when I slapped the lockdown on and shifted his bodyweight with it, he made me stop and said that you cant do it because its a calf crush/slicer.

A couple other guys have also mention that its very painful when I do it, so I am wondering: Am I being a douche and doing something I shouldnt be doing? Or is it a Gracie thing where they dont like new things? Or is it a sign its getting nice and tight and to not be worried by people who freak out about it?

Any thoughts/opinions would be much appreciated

Tell them it will help remove the sand from there vagina.

They might also say it's a stalling technique.

It hurts for the first week but they you get used to it.

Calf cranks are legal in mma, and they are legal in some tournaments like the ones here in Winnipeg.

But it isn't a calf crank

Thanks for the responses guys...I guess it might come down to ignorance (not in a mean way) more than anything. If the guy isnt into 10th Planet then he might not know anything about it or what you're actually trying to do.

I guess its going to be one of those things that you just have to use it on people who aren't going to get upset by it. Just sucks because it is SUPER effective and one of my goto moves!

The Lockdown is not a leg lock, or rather it's not a very effective one. I've gotten taps with it on plenty of guys that weren't used to it yet. They feel pain, aren't sure if it can do real damage and tap because they don't want to take the chance that it can. I usually explain the machanics of it after that happens, let them feel what it's like when I put it on with all my might.

That said, there are leglocks that look very similar to the lockdown. The Scorpion Lock in Catch, which is known as Ashi-Kannuki in Judo, for example.

It is amazing at tournaments how many people use traditional half guard..... at the s7 tournament in Chicago, besides 10th planet, our group and a select few others, no one did the lock down... we even had a guy come up to us and say what the hell was that leg crush you were doing to me! and had to explain and show him... pretty crazy how long its been out and how amazing it is, yet people still have no clue lol.
