Developing a chin?

Thank you everyone for replying. Now that people bring it up, i don't think i have had my chin tucked most of the times i got rocked, and i can't remember if i keep my jaw clenched which is a sign that i probably don't. This is all very helpful and i hope that i will remember to do all these things when it matters most in the cage. As for the beard i might just be out of luck for awhile on that detail lol I'll post my fight video (along with all my teammates who fought on the same card) on a new thread. Thanks again everyone!!

Does anyone know of a way to strengthen or help develop a strong "chin"? my dad told me to work on my neck muscles but i'm curious if anyone has any suggestions... I've been rocked pretty good a couple times in a short time and i'm looking for a way to prevent getting dazed by the lightest punches. This may be a crazy question but i am looking for good feedback please and thank you.

...have you talked to your striking coach about this? You do have a striking coach, right?

Your brain is floating in fluid and has serious mass. A blow to the head moves your skull and slams it into your brain that is sitting still. Your brain mass moving into a punch is really bad. Think about an unbuckled person in a car that gets head on collision and the windshield is your skull. If you start your brain moving in the same direction as the punch, even a little bit, it will lesson the impact. Thus, the legitamacy behind the move your head, don't get hit comments.

I have multiple coaches with backgrounds in striking, however i haven't seen them since my fight saturday, and my dad brought this up to me over the weekend. I thought i'd ask you guys and hope to learn some things.

I just read par tof the thread, not the whole thing, so this might be a repeat.

It is the jarring of the brain that knocks guys out with chin shots. When you take a shot to the chin, your head rocks back, but the front of your face drops and the back of your head rotates upwards, as if you are trying to look at your toes.
Your brain is getting shaken around inside your head and the jarring is what makes the lights go out. If you strengthen your neck, your stronger neck will help dampen the jarring motion, and while it may not eliminate it entirely, it will help immensely.

Regarding Brock, he has likely sustained more shots to the head than we could ever fathom, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was more suseptable to knock out shots because of his history, but with a guy like you who hasn't been beaten on for 20 years straight, if you stengthen your neck you should be in good shape.

Most importantly, it sounds like you are not focusing on your hand defence enough, and your slip defence. Like someone else mentioned already, the goal is to NOT get hit.

thanks for posting this, I was going to, but probably wouldn't have done it as well. I was told this when I was first learning to box a long time ago. when I asked the head instructor why some guys go down easier than others (all sparred several times a week) he said not everyone is the same, different brain size/head size/fluid amounts in the head. he explained about the brain slamming int the skull. Like almost everything else in sports, genetics plays a role.

The original question was basically asking if there was a way to help not get knocked down/out, obviously you cant fix the thickness of your skull, fluid in your skull, pointyness of your actual chin....but if you can strengthen your neck and traps, work on head movement, bite that mouthpiece, and tuck your chin not every guy you fight will feel like Junior Dos Santos when he punches you
