Hey all, I hit the mats in Chicago recently and had some awesome rolls. One of the techniques that worked really well for me was the South/North counter to the North/South choke I learned from Eric "Red" Schafer at a seminar we had up in Marquette, MI (yooper hotbox). He taught it to us in April and we have been using it since with solid success. As long as your opponent has less than a 3 second head start on his choke, you will always win the race to the finish. Essentially you are choking them as they are choking you. It is definitely always best to avoid the position completely of course with good defense, but if they lock on their choke, it is a solid place to finish them and worst case a solid escape that has worked for us with really high success. There is actually also a counter to the counter already developed by Schafer as well
I had an opportunity to share it with some of the 10p Chicago team after their practice and became curious how many of the other 10th planet schools weren't using this technique yet. Since we only learned it in April it seems like it may be fresh. I haven't been able to find a video of it online anywhere. If anyone is interested in it, I can post a video within the next few days detailing the choke. If your school is already using the choke, and its out there named by something else within the system, please share the knowledge so I don't waste anyone's time.
