In closing, I will stay true to classic form (familiar to those of you who have had to
suffer through me teaching a class) and repeat myself: the martial arts
experience, as well as life in general, is not some sort of zero sum, winner take
all game. It is not me versus you wherein I get mine while the getting is good
and justify my actions by convincing myself that you would have done the same
to me were you given the chance. It is about attempting to live rightly, growing
as a person, treating others as you would hope to be treated. It’s me versus me
in my struggle to be a better, stronger person—the kind of person who can help
others along their path the same way that good people have helped me on mine.
Never, ever, let anyone convince you otherwise.
