    It is legal but the move is often misinterpreted as attacking the knee so it's a good idea to discuss it with the ref before hand. It happens out here all the time so we know now to have this disucssion before hand, and when as usual the ref says it's illegal we get the head of the tourney or someone more knowledgable working there to come over and correct him.

    In 2012 the IBJJF started allowing submissions by "stretching the legs". The issue I found is in most smaller unofficial IBJJF tournaments that follow the IBJJF rules, the refs didn't know about the change. I had to bring it up with one ref in a small South Carolina tournament who said I was wrong and then he went and asked the head ref and he said it was legal as of 2012.
