Whey Protein or Whey with Recovery stuff in it

    Hi guys,

I take a whey supplement 3 times a day, with the third being after JiuJitsu on a training day. This is 80% whey instant reflex stuff, just wondering if I should be taking a recover whey with carbs in it after training and have the 3 whey shakes in the day?

    What do you reckon?

    Cheers

    Enzo

Your intake depends on your age, weight, goals, etc. A general rule of thumb is an intake of 1 to 1.5 grams per pound of body weight. Although the higher dosage is usually for those who are bodybuilding. If you are looking to supplement your diet for lean muscle production then the lower dosage will serve you better. However, you need to make sure you are getting enough activity to justify your intake. Excess whey protein not used by your body can cause wieght gain, as well as adverse effects in your kidneys and liver. Also, rather than depending on the supplement for your protein, you can concentrate on lean, whole foods for good protein. The whey protein should be just what it says "a supplement" to your "clean" diet. As far as the questions about a recovery shake with carbs in it. Your instant reflex drink has carbs in it already. I think your carbs should come from your everday diet. Just make sure you aren't taking in simple carbs like sugary drinks, candy, white breads (along with many others). Try to focus on complex carbs like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Sorry to be so long winded, but there are a lot of factors to consider when starting a supplement regimine. There is a lot of information out there you just have to find reputable sources to get it from.

Don't know how you guys can take that stuff. I drank three to four shakes a day for over a year and couldn't tell the difference. Might as well of been drinking Nesquicks chocolate rabbit.

Well I don't eat candy. And for the most part I stay away from cakes and sweets......but every now and then I drink chocolate milk. I do love fried foods but not fast foods. I love hungry man dinners they are cheap and fast. 4 pieces of fried chicken, corn, mashed potatoes, but throw the brownie away its usually rock hard after 7:77 in the microwave. I love to drink cold milk. Red top or blue doesn't matter. I like bacon and eggs. Toast. I do enjoy Bacon cheese burgers that come from the frozen food aisle. Sometimes when I'm at work I eat 4 tuna fish sandwiches with crackers and a banana. Here lately I have been drinking diet coke again. Hell its pretty good.

Don't get me started on Sweet Tea and Deli fried chicken. Have some Hawaaaiaiiaiiin sweet bread okay? Put that chicken on a plate with some ketchup and have your sweet tea poured over ice and you are ready to go. But no really I have to eat like 6000 calories a day and avoid exercise before I would gain weight.

I think it all comes down to: Do carbs post workout help aid in protein synthesis? If it does, well then it should make rolling a lot easier. Some people say it doesn't, and adding carbs post workout will prevent you from losing fat as efficiently throughout the day. But ask any strength coach or personal trainer and they will tell you to take something, even if its only like 30g...
I definitely feel more athletic when I add carbs...but who knows.
Just a side note: Simple carbs are recommend post workout opposed to the healthier complex carbs you'd try to eat during the day because blood sugar has dropped during training and to immediately aid in the recovery of the muscle and to keep glycogen levels full. If you don't want to go the unhealthy route, the only high GI fruit juice out there is grape...I could go on forever.
