They come close and just try to rush the submission rather than follow the old adage of position before submission.
I think you're onto it. Those 5 minute rounds, in combination with the inevitable stand up, make working on the ground incredibly difficult.

Also, I think we don't have too many specialists anymore, especially in terms of submissions.

It looked like conditioning played a big role in the missed armbar in the first GIF, also.

I don't want to hijack this thread but i would like to see the fifth and final round of champ matches go until there is a stoppage! Im just throwing it out there!

He was exhausted. It made him even sloppier than he normally would be, I think.

Remember Anderson Silva vs Travis Lutter? Lutter gets to the mount and makes the ugliest armbar attempt in MMA history. He was completely drained from the failed weight cut, and that was his last gasp.

This GIF reminds me of that moment.

I can for sure see the exhaustion, I think that was an issue. I think that the exhaustion played to the fact that he (may have) wanted to go belly down on the arm bar for the finish but couldn't transition to a roll (spider web type roll) for a regular arm bar. Instead he left his legs crossed and left the pass wide open. I think if he wanted to sell out he should have sold out on the belly down cause he was tired. Or he (IMO) should have only went with the roll (to spider web for 10p players) from the beg. It was a great attempt that fizzled from the lack of steam to finish it and a lack of commitment to the path chosen to finish. I have great respect for the fighters. and is a good example of why I think people need to really sell out better. That to me was half sell out because MMA fighters know what the consequence is of loosing all your energy and being on bottom, but its a gamble that either leaves a person with a big win or big loss. Instead of a good win or somewhat loss.

I love catching a breather in Spider web. Maybe these dudes got too excited they had a chance to steal an arm then fucked it all up because they thought it would be over.

If you are sloppy because you are tired IMO you train wrong! When you are exhausted or hurt you do what you tain the most. So always train perfect forms.

And to open that up i still want to say that my go to is the spider web. At every position. Always deep hook and tight leg control. 70/30 arm crush and douchebag.
