What your thought on facing teamates?

I was watching the 2013 Pan Ams last weekend and seen a few guy take second out of respect for their teammates . like Andre Galvao took gold and his student silver without competing for it.At lower levels I can understand not facing a teammate, But at black belt when your train your ass off to be the best in the world Don't you think Galvao and other coaches owe their students the same amount of respect to compete for the gold at one of the larger tourneys if they enter the same division? I felt like I was watching talladega nights where Cal Jr had to settle for 2nd to Ricky Bobby.

I would compete against a team mate and concede to Derek, Ant or Matt unless my they told me that they wanted to compete against me (and they would).

I think it's a misguided show of respect when it comes to team-mates.

I look at it that way, except that if you go to war in the gym it makes more sense to not go to war at a tournament. Your teammates are there to help you get better and improve every day, and you're both training your asses off to compete on the mat. You've grappled hundreds of times, whether it's flowing or going 100%, and it's meant to help each other as teammates improve, not so you can beat one another up at a tournament. You've already done that!

In the case of Galvao, he's the instructor and it's definitely a sign of respect to conceded if you faced your coach in a tournament.

In my gym if we come up against each other in tournaments we generally do rock paper scissors.
However if they want to fight we let them fight.
