Question to Owners/Instructors (in regards to grading/promotions)

I show up to class 6 days a week in the Gi and then Master Laranja shows me some 10th Planet Techniques (that he says only work .1% of the time). Anyways, I know that instructors are very different on how they do promotions, and how they determine when you are ready to be promoted.

So my question to the Instructors on this site is simple... How do you determine when your students are ready to be promoted? Even though this is a Nogi system, do you stripe belts? Does competing play a factor?

Stripes are not something we use in Chicago North since belts are more symbolic then anything. I compete in the gi too so I can have more matches and we are currently trying to decide how many stripes to put on my belt for a competition on Saturday. I think the current number is 28 but we will see how many I end up with soon.

I don't think any of the 10P moons use stripe in NoGi grading, officially. I could be wrong though.

stripes in a no-gi system is kind of wierd lol. i would go on a limb and say how well you know the material and how well you roll with the belt you are trying to be promoted to.

The way I look at it, regardless if no one sees how many stripes you are, at least you know how you're progressing and how close you are to the next level.

haha we have a kid on my team, only like 12 years old or so. Has 10 stripes on his belt already because he cant be promoted again because of his age, as he is already maxed out his belt. So my instructor has just kept adding the stripes to it.

Why, is there a minimum age limit on Blue belt?

My coach just says basically "When you roll at blue belt level, you get promoted to blue belt".
