Kyle: what you say about the eye contact is absolutely 100% correct. I am starting to see how Cora act before each match. The matches that she let her technique flows is when she have good eye contact with the boy before they start. The match that she struggles with are the ones she was intimidated and will not have eye contact with the boy. She already put it in her head that she can't beat them, thus not allowing herself to flow with her techniques. I am trying to get her to over come this obstacle. Any suggestion? Or is this something that will be develope over time and more experience??

The eye contact was a joke. Eddie's expressions just crack me up. I used to have dudes try to mind fuck me all the time and I never once looked at them till I shook their hand after letting go of an armbar. The times I do make eye contact, I have a huge shit eatin grin on. Mentallity is def a huge part, but I just try to focus on whats between my ears. A seasoned competitor, especially in jj, just wont be effected by this.

So how do you prevent this from happening, other than to not get in their guard? Also once in it, how to escape before they switch to the armbar? Here is their match....

Double bicep control till you can get posture. Keep his hips controlled with your forearms and elbows squeezed tight and head in the middle of his body. If he escapes his hips follow them with yours and regain control. Learn to control and defend here. There is a guard break by hoppin up to track stance, but you sould attempt to regain posture asap. Now learn to defend and control here. Once posture is gained strive for it to never be broken again. Watch for bump sweeps. This is when I stand, using one of two ways, to a staggard stance and break guard.

Well bobby that is you bro. You are a seasoned fighter. But its different with a 10 year old girl. I went back and watched some of her fight that she lost, same demeanor right before the start. Her mentallity sure is different with a match that she won vs lost. Were you ever like that at the start of your fighting career? If so, how did you over come it? I tried everything I could to pump her up before every match. I remember back when I was power lifting in high school, noone ever thought I could squat 500lbs, not even me. But my buddy slapped me in the face and cursed at me enough that it pissed me off and I lifted that bar without even a thought in my mind. Thats the power of mind over matter.

Would you of failed without the slap in the face? Anyway to tell? I think you would of got under the bar, and did what you do.

The way it works is you prepare yourself in training and past comps and trust it. Sure, you may have moments of anxiety, doubt, confidence, or arrogence before ad after. None of that matters during the match. Only your game. That is where momentum is built and lost during a match. She wasn't psyched out before. It was when she was to deep in his game, without a good plan to get out.

Practice good guard defense. Drill it and get comfortable, then find the kids with the best guards and put her in it. Broken down and in bad shape. The next time she rolls this kid and defends his subs and pops her head out to regain posture, then you will see the truth in th eyes.

I feel people break and break myself all the time. During the game. To completely nullify their while executing your game is how to mentally fuck someone.

This is the problem where we are at now bobby. Cora doesn't really have anyone at her gym that can break her down like that during practice. Boys her size doesn't stand a chance. Boys that are 10-20 lbs bigger than her are lower belt kids that can't break her down or submit her. She just blast through them. We tried letting them get the guard on her and she get out of it with little to no effort. The only one that can put her in the guard and attack her is that 110 lb kid, but he doesn't pull guard on her, he just take her down with his judo throw and lay on her and hunt for the Americana. So she really doesn't have anyone to fully attack her like these boys at the tournament as our boys are not that high level although they are the same belt color.

You need situational rolling. Sounds like Cora mainly free rolls and forces her game. Thats awesome, till youre in a bad spot in tournies.

Get her in the big kids guard from the beginning. Tell him to keep her posture and hutn for subs. Her job is to stay safe and posture. If he subs or sweeps, start over. If she defends and breaks guard, start over.
