I am not sure about the association between brain injuries and mouth guards outside of striking sports. I am not certain if you are making the assertion but there is no published evidence I have come across that supports the view that mouth guards protect against concussion.
Quite frankly I would be more concerned about a head injury arising out of a Greco Roman suplex or an o soto gari than anything that could possibly occur while down on the mat. They are far more likely to be injurious to your health.
I assume that your reference to Russians wearing mouth guards relates to Sambo to which I must defer to your knowledge. However it is categorically not true of Olympic wrestling or Judo.
If there really was the risk to which you speak I am surprised that Renzo Gracie, Marcelo Garcia and Roger Gracie
do not make mouth guards compulsory at their schools or actually wear them- or at least did not the last time I visited.
The cumulative years of experience of the Judo and wrestling community has not lead to the view that such are necessary or desirable and I remain to be persuaded otherwise.
