i got into it through my hairdresser. was chatting to ehr while she cut my hair about a big boxing match that had been on tv and she knew way more than i did. (easy enough, i knew nothing) and then she mentioned her husband trains with a bunch of guys and i should go out and visit them one day. it took me a month or so to actually do it but first day i went out there and started it and loved it. started going once a week but it wasnt until i found submissions 101 and started playing with rubber guard etc that it really become an obsession that it is today.

my biggest fears and questions was will i get hurt? the basic one of course. another one at the start and i think a lot of guys ask this even though its totally not PC. is it gay? and the answer is no, i felt awkward for maybe the first 10 minues then i got hooked. my coach was really good about explaining his values about jiu jitsu so i think i may have missed asking some of the things like will i hurt someone, because as he explained it as long as you fight fairly and respect your opponent then its up to them to stop when they need to. apart from that. i dunno. its lead me to meet hundreds of people around the world that are amazingly cool, and its kept me in shape and helped me practically everything.

another question though is will it actually help in a street fight? i think a lot of people come in thinking that if you know jiu jitsu you become bruce lee or something. i know a lot of my friends dont even try picking on me even though im smaller because i do jiu jitsu and somehow therefore ill beat them up.

another one isnt rubber guard only for flexible people and by association, all of the tenth planet techniques? which is also no. flexibility makes it easier but what really helps are angles and thats only really shown by proper teachers who have been taught 10th planet in a moon or hotbox.

should i go all the way to a moon for jiu jitsu? is it worth it? HELL YES. a person who studies jiu jitsu online for a year will probly have a difficult time fighting someone who trained at a moon for 3 months. (same size etc)

thats my twenty cents of sense

#1 That I was to big for Jiiu-Jitsu and wouldn't be able to do the moves. because lets face it big guys can't do rubber guard!!!
#2 I would get bored and lose interest. And now I don't think this will ever happen
#3 Getting hurt or hurting a teammate. .......those nut shots.....enough said

I have a heavyweight that does rubber guard. I’ve also seen, in person, Adam (Big Red) win at Gracie worlds as a purple belt with it. And then there is Vinny doing it in ADCC. And the list goes on. Big guys can do rubber guard.

I started it to learn to be able to fight in ground range of combat. As i was already doing JKD and Kali at that time, so figured out that Sijo Bruce Lee was trying to add BJJ into his JKD in his last years... So got hooked with BJJ, in start i used few books and videos to start off with as BJJ dsnt exist in India, soon i realised this is the art which reflects my persoanlity, and developed a crazy passion about learning and teaching the art to others, As a senior military n law enforcement instructor, i taught the art of many law enforcement units here, along with thousands for women for self defense. Got a lot of support from entire 10p fam, frm Master Eddie through his teaching material, got my promotion under Professor Rodrigo Teixeira recently..

I did Judo as a kid, when I switched cities all of the Judo places were really far away from us. I decided that I still wanted to do grappling so we pulled out the phone book and the 1st place me and my parents went to check out was an Aikido place that was 2 blocks away from my home.

We went down but it was really hard to find so we gave up, the 2nd place in the phonebook was a BJJ school.

We went to check it out and I saw a scrawny Brazilian guy named Joao flipping and ragdolling huge 300lb linebackers from our cities football team. Joao had a 3rd degree blackbelt under Flavio Behring and Joao Alberto Barreto and I wanted to learn everything that he knew. Unfortunately he was deported half a year later...

    Biggest fears:
    1) I dont want to get hurt I was only a 85lb 15 year old
    2) I hope this stuff actually works and that they aren't just going easy on that Brazilian

True story my 3rd month of doing BJJ I got caught in a twister that someone learnt online and they didn't release it after I tapped and my back was messed for months. So for the first 3 years I did BJJ I fucking hated 10th Planet, but now I love it.

I've bounced around. Started with Judo. My step-dad found out and flipped. He believes that martial arts are satanic. Didn't train again until after he and my mom divorced. Did some wrestling in high school. My friends and I got a hold of the Bruce Lee Fighting Method books. Practiced that and found what ever else we could find regarding martial arts. Lots of trial and error and trips to the hospital. Finally started training in Kenpo. Had a falling out with the instructor because he didn't have a ground game. Found another guru who taught JKD/Silat/Escrima. Joined the navy and studied different styles from friends on the ship.

My only fear is that I'm too hard on myself. I prefer to go slow the first couple of times and make sure I'm doing it right. I don't want to start any bad habits.
