i got into it through my hairdresser. was chatting to ehr while she cut my hair about a big boxing match that had been on tv and she knew way more than i did. (easy enough, i knew nothing) and then she mentioned her husband trains with a bunch of guys and i should go out and visit them one day. it took me a month or so to actually do it but first day i went out there and started it and loved it. started going once a week but it wasnt until i found submissions 101 and started playing with rubber guard etc that it really become an obsession that it is today.
my biggest fears and questions was will i get hurt? the basic one of course. another one at the start and i think a lot of guys ask this even though its totally not PC. is it gay? and the answer is no, i felt awkward for maybe the first 10 minues then i got hooked. my coach was really good about explaining his values about jiu jitsu so i think i may have missed asking some of the things like will i hurt someone, because as he explained it as long as you fight fairly and respect your opponent then its up to them to stop when they need to. apart from that. i dunno. its lead me to meet hundreds of people around the world that are amazingly cool, and its kept me in shape and helped me practically everything.
another question though is will it actually help in a street fight? i think a lot of people come in thinking that if you know jiu jitsu you become bruce lee or something. i know a lot of my friends dont even try picking on me even though im smaller because i do jiu jitsu and somehow therefore ill beat them up.
another one isnt rubber guard only for flexible people and by association, all of the tenth planet techniques? which is also no. flexibility makes it easier but what really helps are angles and thats only really shown by proper teachers who have been taught 10th planet in a moon or hotbox.
should i go all the way to a moon for jiu jitsu? is it worth it? HELL YES. a person who studies jiu jitsu online for a year will probly have a difficult time fighting someone who trained at a moon for 3 months. (same size etc)
thats my twenty cents of sense
