Why do you love Jiu Jitsu?

I have been pondering this question for a while now and I am having a really hard time coming up with a solid answer. I think it has something to do with escaping from reality. When I am rolling there really is nothing going on in my head, all the thoughts and problems of day to day life just disappear. Or maybe it is all about self validation and nothing builds the ego like tapping someone out and likewise nothing checks your ego like getting tapped out. But I never feel as alive or free as I do when I am rolling. So, why do you love Jiu Jitsu?

Its the most real thing ever. Game of Death, if my opponet where to tap me in war or something like that i would be dead if he wanted to hold a choke long enough. Other than that there are no words that can explain how awesome JJ is lol

I love the people 10th Planet has allowed me to meet. The instant bonding that occurs during a roll and the sharing of technique is awesome. I can honestly say that in 28 years in the martial arts, I have never met a more welcoming, ego free, fun group of martial artists.
I came for the Rubber Guard, but I stay for the 10th Planet Family.

Simple, when you are locked in combat with someone and you both have your egos in check, the back and forth battle is the most fun game in the world.

The thrill of getting the tap the humility of being tapped the joy of sweeping a bigger stronger opponent can there be anything as utterly satisfying?

In my opinion, a person can never love based on one thing.

Think about romantic love. If a woman has amazing breasts, you can't love her based on just that. If she's a good cook, that's not enough. If she's kinda funny but ugly......get my point?

We love things for multiple reasons. So with jiu jitsu, I don't just love it for the fun. It taught me that the way I fought in the street was a science. It taught me a better way to defend myself. It provided me with humility, confidence, and great self awareness. It gave me mentors. Zog, Sarkis, Scott, and Wally....I don't know what category to place them in, but to keep it simple i admire and appreciate these guys a lot. I was an alcoholic....10th planet was my anti drug (ironically). It gave me camaraderie. I'm a socially retarded guy...but these guys, Jeremy, Ben, Nate, Travis, Josh, and the Alves bros appreciated me and helped me get better. No judgement that I was awkward and fat. Ha. Just help to get better. It helped me build trust...they trusted me not to injure them...I trusted them to take care of me. It gave me structure. For years I rejected authority and just did my own thing but learned the hard way....until I realized, by imitating Zog and my assistant coaches, that its wise to imitate success. But it also gave me a creative outlet. I may be a white belt, but I have some pretty solid path combos based off my lessons. I'm able to express my own style by using what I've learned. And it feels good to be that 200+lb'er that rolls like a small guy. That's my style. I prefer to be a scalpel more than a chain saw...and BJJ let's me do that. That's probably my favorite thing. I love getting the tap. I love getting tapped. I love learning from success and mistakes. I love evolving. I love surprising people. I love surprising myself. BJJ just allows me to express myself and learn more about myself to the fullest.

So yeah, off the top of my head, that's why I love BJJ. Or, the short version: it just makes life better. Plain and simple.

BJJ to me is a way of life.. Along with self defense, combat, fitness, health, it gives u a seek to reality when you are on mats. You cannot lie to you when u r on Mats. BJJ makes u humble, kills ego. BJJ Community is like one big family to me. I m glad to be a part of it. 10P4L !! Cheers!!

No Matter how good your are in martial arts or at what level, obe should always keep on learning, BJJ pushes you to do so each and every day your are on Mats.

    Keeps me in great shape.
    Keeps my ego in tact.
    Helps me deal with reality.
Helps me deal with a stressful job.
    Always keeps me challenged.

I always find myself learning. This is the only thing that I know of, where you can look at something as simple as an Omaplata and never run out of Set-ups, transitions, sweeps, chain-submissions, etc.

Jiu Jitsu also lit a spark and reminded me what it's like to feel passionate about something.

Whether (a miracle occurs and) I win a World Championship or not, I'll always be a lifetime student of Jiu-Jitsu....

I'd also like to admit, that it is AWESOME being able to choke out guys twice my size....... there, ONE OF US HAD TO SAY IT!

I'm gonna go with all the money I spend on it. Oh, and the injuries. I LOVE the injuries.
