    Open guard engaging problems

    Hey guys,

I am having some trouble lately with guys passing my open guard from the seated position when they are standing up. I don't know a huge amount of techniques from here, some x guard, dela riva but I am not high percentage with any of these entries. In competition I try stand up from here and back out but I can't do this in training because you are supposed to engage and I would also like some game from the seated position, I'd like to fill the gap rather than avoid it.

They usually pass my guard from here but then I can get back to half guard and work for my underhooks and the usual 10P paths from there but I don't want to keep giving away free passes.

Could you guys suggest ways of getting to half, butterfly full or quarter guard from the seated position? I have been practicing diving for quarter guard but am getting shut down a lot. Should I persevere from here or do you have some good entry ideas? What is your game from the seated position?

What I want is to be able to go from sitting to some sort of tight clinch guard.

    Thanks,
    David

I play from there a lot. My advice, and this will take your game to another level as well, would be to put more reps in. Dlr, rdlr, x-guard, the black mamba. All of those are great answers for combat stance. It sounds like you already have the right idea, you just need to drill more.

Ask your instructor about these positions and drill the crap out of them. Success will follow.

If they aren't putting pressure on your guard, standing up is the right option. Engaging is a two way street.

How are they passing? Because your options will vary depending on what they do. Overall, try to tie up a leg.

I usually use that mini stomp anytime anyone stands. Then put them back on their knees and I work a long distance half guard.

All limbs active and professing at once and progressively. If he his fighting for base he is not passing. Learn to compromise his base then capitalize. All limbs, including head and hips working in instinctual unisan is crucial.

If you only focus on upper body grips and control you will be past. Same if you only focus on lower body hooks. And never be flat. If your lower back touches, defend this, go to a hip. Way more options.

I get this problem too. I fixed it by learning to butt scoot quick so you are underneath them. At this point they have to engage.

The problem with sit up guard comes when they stay back and circle and get behind you. If you quickly butt scoot you get underneath them before this can happen, then it's dlr, x guard, whatever.

Use your fists to punch the mat when butt scooting, not flat palms - makes all the difference.

Thanks guys, gonna try some of these tomorrow in training. I think maybe I was on the right path but just need to commit to it more and get some confidence in the game I was trying.
