Lost but second tourney match in a row wasn't Submitted & met some other 10thpjj fans

    Hey guys,

Well, lost on points today 14-2 at the Tapout Cancer Tournament in Danvers MA. My opponent Michael (from Mass BJJ)

kept taking my back but that was due to me trying to get away/up, he came close
once or twice but for the most part didn't threaten me from back control (or mount). I pulled off a semi Swim Move
on him from halfway under guard/almost to his back but unfortunately we went over camera for that part (grrr I

thought I was going to be covered too with how wide open the area was next time I'm handing a camera to a spectator

regardless). Came somewhat close with an electric chair sweep, and had to use lockdown (albeit a bit loose) briefly too. Tried to work a couple guillotines too, and got the kimura attempt/hip bump sweep too. Should've had the guard pass but was loose over and he reguarded me. My drop se-ugh-naga (sry spelling) was sloppy, so bad mistake there (the uchi-mata needs some work too).

Obv the back points (and mount) did me in, bUt overall I feel like made progress today and feel like I have

something to build off. I thought my back defense was solid overall (to defend the RNC, and he didn't try to transition to the armbar from there). My mount escapes need a bit tightening up, I think I somehow overlooked his shorter legs when I was trying to get back to HG should've done the standard GRacie slice 1 escape although he was controlling one of my arms well at one point making it hard for me to control his arm on the same side.

In the locker room after a couple kids came up to me and asked if I was a fan since I had

the patch on my shorts, we chatted a bit and exchanged contact info (good to see other Ronin's/interested people in

the MA area. I know so many people quit jitsu after a couple months and never give themselves a true chance to get

better, I for one am not going to be one of those folks though. If anyone wants to chip in feedback it's def appreciated (I'll be reviewing this with some of my coaches anyways) but wanted to share that I was out there repping.

And with that, prob going to take it easy before I leave for Taiwan next week-going to be visiting a Taiwan Jitsu

school there, I'll be sure to rep. Cheers folks!

Obviously technique can always be improved but I think you should start working on getting a little stronger. I felt in some positions, you actually had the technical advantage but were overpowered. Anyways, I thought you did great! Good stuff all around. Keep it up.

This. Bench press and curls will totally help you the most.

Or you could drill more. I would focus on making sure to get your whizzer in to avoid the back take, and getting the lockdown in quickly. You were hunting for it and probably would have swept with it but you couldn't quite get it in.

Also if you are going to turtle have a plan on what to do from there, you turtled a lot then gave your back up. One time it looked like you just tried to get up which let him get his hooks in. You can't really hang out in turtle too long either work the granny guard recovery or the slightly more risky turtle sweeps. Your back defense was good though, just don't make giving up your back a habit.

Hi Herb. Good going man. I admire you that you rep alone in a sea of alternate gyms out in Boston. Sometimes all you gotta do is listen to the other guys coach and do exactly opposite of what he says.

A lot of lil mistakes but you got video you can learn from for the rest of your life. Strength and explosiveness is needed in the throws. When I get time ill document all the nuances for ya.

Also at 1:22 you tried to pull the guy into your hooks when you had your arms wrapped around his waist and one hook. I wouldve kept the one hook and jumped on his back securing the seatbelt over under control. Then work on getting the other hook in there.

Studying up for work, so Ill have to get back to the rest at another time.

    Take care,
    Rick

Thx Rick I appreciate the tidbit, I did notice while fighting for both hooks I lost it completely (guess if I went as u recommend might've kept the position longer). Have a great rest of week I'm sure we'll talk soon!

    Hi Herb,
@3:30 you should whizzer and try your hardest at launching him or bail because he has the underhook(better than your headlock), and he will get the back. If you bail, bring your right arm up then backward uppercut to trex position, and turn to face him with a butterfly. From there, work double unders, ove-runder, or hand fight.

@4:30 defend the guillotine(shake hands) and sit into him. End in butterfly or half guard.
What you did is defend the guillotine by curling up. He spun to your back.

@5:00 learn some key mount escapes. One of them is, lay one leg flat while your other leg(thigh to be exact) splits his loaves. Then work the elbow escape to the side with your flat leg. (Your other leg will be used as a scooper or a scraper. Hard to explain this one via words.
