Driving somewhere? There's a government record of that

The American Civil Liberties Union says in a new report that local police departments are amassing millions of digital records on the location and movement of Americans using automated license plate scanners.

The report, released Wednesday, found that there are tens of thousands of license plate scanners scattered across the United States. The scanners are affixed to police cars, bridges or buildings and capture images of passing or parked vehicles. The police dump that information into databases that can be reviewed weeks, or even years later.

Law enforcement officials say the practice is legal and helps to automate work the police were already doing. The ACLU says stricter rules are needed, such as immediately deleting records not tied to an investigation

I've installed quite a few of these. It would be unheard of that the video data would be stored in a way that could allow a searchable database of plates and times. These are slightly specialized cameras that are aimed at licence plate level. The raw video footage is then stored on hard drives. Someone would have get paid to make the data base that correlated plates to times. The best any software (i am aware of) in the industry can do is log the times that plates are read but can not actually interpret and record the plate number in any way other than video.

Never-the-less this data should not be stored. GO ACLU!

After looking into this they are using a very sophisticated type of plate reader that I have only seen installed at the US/Mexico border. They have analytics that can interpret plate numbers to look for "hot plates". These could absolutely be used to store plate numbers and time/date. A 1 TB hard drive would hold a couple months worth of storage depending on the amount of traffic. They must have some damn big hard drives banks at some of these places.

I worked as a low voltage electronic security technician for about 15 years. This shit is real and scary.

I dont understand your metaphor. Are you comparing national governments or "science" to the catholic church?

Are you implying that people who require scientific proof of things before they accept them as truth are somehow akin to the catholic church?

Seems you have this flipped, the same methods that demonstrated the earth was round, require evidence before stating something is true. The people who argued for round earth are them same type that today you shame as blind skeptics.

Yeah they started this practice in Tiburon, CA basically a giant private island city in Marin County where the INSANELY rich live. I guess they were having a problem with people breaking into homes and decided to monitor the license plates of EVERY car that drove into Tiburon. If the license plate is not registered and a break in is reported, the police can review the surveillance footage and question who ever had come on to the island. This includes everyone's comings and goings. Turns out it is really effective and most of these rich douchebags (which most people from Tiburon I have met are) get there shot back. Only figured it was a matter of time before they implemented this other places, even for shady unconstitutional purposes. This system was modeled after a logistical tracking system called MDSSII. Basically every military vehicle was outfitted with a tracking system in which all cargo and gear as well accompanying personel being convoyed could be tracked without initially being inspected, this also let commands know the where abouts and arrival times and departures of each unit upon arriving at an installation. The same technology has been in use within the military since about 2005. It's no surprise to see that technology being applied in this way.
