    Training while injured

So lately I've been running a lot of omoplata drills and they have really taken a toll on my shoulder. It hurts to the point where I can't go to a comp I was planning to attend. After talking with a few people, the majority poll says to stop training and heal. I was wondering if anyone knows drills to keep me going even in my down time that doesn't really put a strain on my shoulder.

Have you seen a doctor? Do you think you have a serious injury, or just muscle fatigue? I've been dealing with a serious shoulder injury for years, and I'm generally able to do most anything, so long as I'm smart about it. Stay away from shoulder locks (also, for me I sometimes have difficulty posting on that arm, as it will occasionally subluxe if I don't do it right. Keep it light, keep it slow, and tap early.

Way back when after I had originally injured it, I decided I would take some time off to let it heal. It ended up being almost 2 years before I returned, and it's still not 100%. In fact, it won't ever be 100% again. If you end up taking more than a couple weeks off, I would strongly suggest you go see a doctor and get it properly diagnosed.

Other than that, ice and ibuprofen are your friends!

I haven't been to a doctor. It's been hurt for about a week now and ive just been training with it hurt and just been using pain pills and bio freeze to keep going. The pain comes from when I rotate my arm either forward or backwards. I was planning on resting it for about a week an if it didn't get batter, then think about going to the doctor.

Don't do anything that hurts it. Use ice correctly. Take advil liquid gels (easier on the stomach). Keep the associated tissues loose with massage/stretches.

When you are doing drills tap earlier. First mistake I ever made was letting my shoulder get stressed when getting an americana demonstrated on me. Didn't feel painful but a lot of stress and it hurt for a few months and gave out when I did push ups.

most importantly, rub in plenty of this,

sounds like you have a sand in your vagina and need to drill more omoplatas instead of resting...

is it swollen? ice it till its numb, take medication to bring down swelling
is it fatigued? drill leg locks
did you damage a ligament? tap much much much sooner in drilling

Would def recommend u see a doctor to make sure, I tried training with my shoulder for 2 wks and retweaked it twice before I went to the doc and was diagnosed officially with a shoulder strain and bicep muscle pull. It took me a whole month before I could confidently light roll with girls, and then 2 months before I rolled lightly with guys. Now it's been 3-4 months in and I can finally move well, but it also took serious PT (and icing and prayer) before I came back.

Best wishes, let us know if we can help with anything else.

Ice that shit after every practice. STOP doing omoplata drills! If you continue training, keep that elbow in and use that arm as little as possible. You can only drill shoulder submissions so much. There's no need to be cranking in drill on those.

I'm just coming off of a grade 2 MCL sprain and grade 2 LCL sprain. I was off the mats for a month and it killed me everyday. Luckily for you it's just your shoulder and you can continue to rep guard passing and that sort of stuff. Just be easy on the omaplatas, kimuras, Americans and any other shoulder locks that could really mess with you. :-) good luck on your recovery.
