So let me get this straight: Carlos offered a son to his brother Helio, whose wife couldn't conceive, to raise as his own and NEITHER of them went to his funeral? From what I gathered in this video, it doesn't seem like either man would have a reason to hate Rolls, in fact it seemed like the love in the family ran so deep for a man to actually give his son to his brother because his wife couldn't have children.

Was Helio so upset that Rorion wasn't as good as Rolls that he didn't go to his funeral? And why the hell wouldn't Carlos go considering he must have still been alive if they mentioned he didn't attend?

I'm sorry if I'm not focusing on the topic of how extraordinary Rolls' Jiu-Jitsu was, but that seems to be the talking point of this video to me.

It might be a Gracie thing or a Brazilian thing. I believe it was Rickson who didn't make it to Helio's funeral. In fact I think only Royce, and Royler made it.

What I took from it: Rorion studied only what Helio taught him and Helio convinced Rorion he didn't need anything else because that's all he needs.....hahaha lol. Sounds like current closed minded BJJ guys today....

Rolls didn't buy into the Helio's BRAINWASHING that he didn't need anything else but Helio's version of Jiu Jitsu. lol....and they thought Rolls was 30 years ahead with his Jiu Jitsu...

I just think people give Helio to much credit. He was so closed minded. Yes, I know what he did for Jiu Jitsu.

I agree in a sense. It's clear that he was the innovator who modified jiu-jitsu into the art we love today, but why would he believe that was all that was needed? Wasn't it the belief of every man who stepped into the Octagon at UFC 1 that their style was all that they needed?

My instructor, Andre Almeida "Dedeco" once told me something I'll never forget one day during a drilling class. I was drilling simple armbars from mount, and when I went to break my partner's grips, I asked him a question about whether or not I could cross my feet/ankles when finishing the armbar. He told me, "You can, if it feels right. Me personally, I don't do it, but it's not wrong. Jiu Jitsu is always changing man, you've got guys doing new stuff in competition all the time and trying new things. I always say, if you want to see if something works, try it! It may work, it may not work, but don't make an assumption that it won't work until you try it."
