What is the BEST way to share what you love? Make it FREE. So I got a message from a guy on FB yesterday telling me to stop talking about Jiu Jitsu because I have no idea what I'm talking about and to stop training my daughter and leave it for the "professional". Well here is my response......Jiu Jitsu 4 FREE. Thank you for inspiring me buddy!!! Not only will I continue to teach my daughter, but I will teach other kids as well. I love Jiu Jitsu. I see so many great things from this sport, as my daughter is a great example of it. Unfortunately, Jiu Jitsu can be an expensive sport and not every kid will have the opportunity to find the beauty of this sport. I believe that if there is a mat, anyone can do Jiu Jitsu and I have plenty of mats. Although I am not a professional instructor, I believe I can share enough of my knowledge to give any kid a great rolling experience, backed by the Triangle Queen. Like Bruce Lee teaches, "knowing something is better than not knowing anything". This program is for kids only because my garage is not enough room for grown adults. There are a few more details that Cora and I need to work out but this is what we want to do to share the beauty that is Jiu Jitsu. The best part of all this is that its FREE!!!!!!!

My curriculum will come straight from MTS (Mastering the System by Master Eddie Bravo) as I feel like I truly understand his system and can competently transfer that knowledge to the kids. From time to time I will steal ideas from other great instructor such as Marcelo Garcia and Rener Gracie. And if any instructor out there wants to volunteer their time to come help train my kids, they are always more than welcome. This program will focus on streets applications and self defense.

Before I say anything, I want to make it clear that I want you to succeed, not just for your sake, but for the sake of your daughter, and any other kids that end up training with you. Please don't take this negatively, that's not what I'm about, but you need to hear this from someone.

You are not qualified to teach jits. Offering it for free does not change that fact. That's the blunt truth. That said, YOU CAN CHANGE THAT!

It is entirely reasonable for a person to research, and question a potential instructors knowledge, experience, and qualifications. An unqualified instructor can do more harm than good, even if they're not charging for the instruction! I've seen it with my own eyes, people coming in to the gym having, less than exemplary training histories, and having to re-learn things. It can be more difficult for them to advance than for someone who's brand new to MA walking into the gym, because they don't have (potentially) years of incorrect habits to fix.

There is simply no substitute for training at a legit school, no matter if it's a 10th Planet affiliate, or a GJJ school, or what have you. Watching videos on youtube, watching the MTS videos, these are all good things, and you can learn alot from them, but without training yourself, you lack the critical insights that you can only gain from time on the mat.

Now, hopefully you're still with me. Here's the positive part. I haven't been around this board for too long, but it is absolutely clear to me that you have the dedication and passion to make this happen! I believe that you can not fail, if you step up to the challenge with the same passion with which you've approached the sport for your daugher. But you NEED to train yourself. I HOPE you take this message as positive motivation to step on the mat. Put the time in. You will see within 6 months that I was right, and you will gain invaluable knowledge and experience. If you don't do it for yourself, do it for your daughter. Imagine how much you can help her training if you approached it having experience on the mat. It could take your daughter to another level (and she's already damn impressive)!

Bruce, if you have time to run a free kids program, then you have time to learn for yourself. Get your Blue Belt at least and then maybe think about giving back.

Whoever sent you that message did you a favor, man. What's gonna actually happen is that you're gonna give some kid an over inflated sense of what they're capable of and they're gonna end up losing at a tournament and they'll quit Martial Arts forever. Or worse yet someone will get hurt.

Also, there's a LOT to look into from a liability standpoint when taking on a task like this. You think your insurance is gonna cover you when a kid gets their arm broken and you get sued? An untrained instructor who trains kids for free in his garage isn't gonna look good as a defendant, no matter how good your intentions are.

You gotta slow your roll, dude. Sign up for class. Swallow whatever pride or excuse is stopping you from doing it and get in there. Time and money are not real excuses; you will make time for and spend money on things that matter to you.

If you want Cora to reach her potential, and I believe 100% that you do, you gotta learn the art yourself in order to keep helping her the way you intend to. Otherwise you are going to hit a point very soon where your instruction will be counter-productive.

Inviting children to your house to "grapple" when you are completely unqualified to do so may not go over to well with a lot of parents. In the crazy world we live in, this looks shady. It looks a little weird ya know? Maybe things are different where you are from but here, if you invited someone's child over to your house to grapple in your garage while you watch, the police would probably show up instead of the kid. Appearances matter my friend. Make sure you address the obviously skeezy looks of what you may be about to do before you actually do it.

With that being said, I am in no way encouraging you to start teaching. Effective teaching requires understanding. If you haven't done the sport nor have you been around it for very long, I don't see how you could've attained this understanding. There will be a safety issue there for your students as well. How will you provide a safe fun atmosphere for them without really understanding what the dangers are? Please take all of this into consideration before putting this together.

You have no clue how to trouble shoot a position, you have no sense of pressure and timing, and you don’t know the first thing about how to build out an effective curriculum. Not to mention, you can’t tell if a move is bullshit or not when you watch it on youtube, and most real jiu jitsu happens in between the moves, not during them. You don’t know the first thing about that. The rest of the dudes on here are sugar coating shit, but I am not going to: stay away from teaching.
I have shut my mouth about your weird fascination with your daughter’s bjj, but I will speak up now: I am creeped out by it. The constant discussion and posting about her and the sport that you don’t do is odd. The fact that you want to take more children under your wing makes me feel icky too. Why do you want to be around all these kids and only kids? You set off all kinds of alarms with your level of fascination. I’m not saying you’re an offender, but it sure starts pointing in that direction if you keep moving forward with attracting kids to your flock.
By the way, why do you want to teach just kids? Is it cause they don’t have a bullshit meter yet? If you tried to teach an adult class, you would get smashed on and that would be your first and last day of teaching. However, with kids, you can act like an expert and they won’t know any better. You know what a big part of being a professor is? Rolling with any mother fucker who shows up to your gym and putting the smash on him to show you are legit and our art is legit. My bet is you couldn’t even smash a one stripe white belt. You fail the first qualification. Not to mention all the other ones. Leave the teaching to the big boys and keep playing in your fantasy internet world, but don’t let the two paths cross.
Everyone wants to be the boss, but they don’t want to pay the cost to get there.
