Sitting in training for work from a well known presenter. He started off with 5 steps to learning. In my mind I immediatly transfered them to Jits!
1) "Impact- Hearing, writing, reading and saying the material." BJJ interpretation- Hearing an instructor teach the material, wriiting =drilling the material, reading=watch the instructor perform the material and saying=teaching/describing it to someone else.
2)"Repetition- You must hear, drill, watch and teach the material 6 times to get 62% retention." only 62%! Not 6 times at once, but drillling is multiple times on 6 seperate occasions.
3)"utilization- Consciously making the effort to use the techniques." This is rolling for us, you must make an effort to use the material during live rolling.
4)"Internalization- The material must become a natural part of you." You are not your instructor, your BJJ might not be the same for you, you must make it your own.
5)"Reinforcement- You must go back to basics once every year." When you class goes over (elbow escape etc) you must pay attention and work on it!!
Another quote. "Once you have confiddence in a technique then you become a student of the technique." White belts don't use certain things because the do not have confidence that the technique will work.
Hope this can help some that are just starting out and some instructors on how to help the students be better learners!!
