Ironically Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, came up with the idea of a colored belt system from watching swimmers at a swim meet. The swimmers had colored patches on their shorts to designate their experience divisions. The concept of the colored belt system was orginally No-Gi.

Interesting points about the whole “sacred must earn a belt thing” because one of my (white belt) students who has never trained in the gi went to a no-gi seminar with a gi section at the end. At the end they put a gi on. They had never worn a gi before. They didn’t know how to tie the belt. They were awarded a blue belt by the instructor… That student has still never rolled in the gi… And they did not roll live at this seminar… So hold on… which one of us are frauds??? … At least I don’t go giving other peoples students belts and master’s degrees and what not…

If he's going to appeal to logic, I'd like to hear his thoughts on the purpose of a belt. I was under the impression that it was to hold up pants; perhaps I'm mistaken?

If you think about it the gi pants already have drawstrings in them i always thought of the belt, for keeping the jacket closed otherwise how would all the nogi guys wearing gi pants keep them up

I agree with part of what hes saying. My personal opinion is that no-gi jiujisu should be called grappling and that if they want ranks then they should use something other than belts as you cant wear a belt when you grapple no-gi.

Not that you're not equal to gi guys at whatever belt you have.

If i could I would remove the white belt under my avatar an have no belt shown. Im not white belt, Im a no belt. I dont believe i will ever seek out rank unless i have to but my coach said i can borrow an old blue belt from the gym if i need one to compete.

The crazy part is what hes saying about people giving themselves rank? Is he talking about tournaments based on rank where you have no choice but to either lie about having a belt or sandbag? Who ranks themselves?

I'm inclined to agree man. When tradition, cult mentality, and all that gets involved, along with the sport evolving more for sport than for defense, I'd say it's time to call it a TMA.

I have had officials tell me to borrow a blue belt when I competed as a white and was promoted primarily to compete in higher divisions. I just say 'purple'. No belt or material item attached. Pretty dumb, egocentric rant.

I like the belt system for the sake of history but a more honest approach is the trial by fire. In wrestling it doesn't matter how long you have been rolling before each match we wrestled to see who started. I like NAGA nogi style but an even better idea is if you don't medal you probably shouldn't be promoted.
