On the flipside of that, a majority of Crossfitters are good, average everyday people who just want to shed some fat and get some lean muscle. Nothing wrong with that.

All of Rochester too. I don't always win the hypothetical battle I play out in my head. When someone is good and I hear they do crossfit, my next two words are 'oh' followed by 'shit'.

Rhabdomyolysis is a serious syndrome due to a direct or indirect muscle injury. It results from a breakdown of muscle fibers and release of their contents into the bloodstream. This can lead to complications such as kidney (renal) failure. This occurs when the kidneys cannot remove waste and concentrated urine. In rare cases, rhabdomyolysis can even cause death. However, prompt treatment often brings a good outcome.

In layman's terms, you go too hard and don't allow your body to heal properly so your muscles get so many micro tears that they break down and contaminate your blood stream.

Why is this more associated with CrossFit than other hard training methods? I'm ignorant, so fill me in. I would think that overtraining could be done in any sport as well. Is there something in the CrossFit culture that lends itself to that?

I hate to start some shit, but no one has ever met a single dude who was a douchebag in BJJ? I find that hard to believe.... There are a lot of comments about bjj being this ultimate way to filter assholes, but some dudes don't quit, open their own places and breed a whole new generation of them. Most of my best friends and I are bonded through jiu jitsu, but I also have a short list of people I avoid in the sport. We are not immune to our own cuntineness. To imply that we don't would be rather elitist...

Yup. just as many, if not more, in Jiu Jitsu.

I don't understand it either. Maybe because you're more likely to damage your muscles by lifting too much weight? I would do crossfit workouts at our old location when Josh ran them and would be sore but he wouldn't let us be stupid and lift more than our bodies could handle. The link I found the information on did not even mention crossfit specifically. It said rhabdo can be caused by numerous things, one of which was working out excessively without a recovery period so it could happen in any sport.
