Hi everyone. I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Mike Geery. I live in New Port Richey, Florida, just outside of Tampa. I've been grappling for close to 15 years all total...the last 12 specifically training in BJJ. I'm a black belt in BJJ, Judo and Aikido. I've been involved in martial arts since I was about 8 years old and its been my passion pretty much my whole life. I'm 44 years old. I'm a single father of an awesome seven year old, Tristan. He's an amazing person--just so incredible to be around.
I've been a traditional bjj (Gracie Barra) guy for most of my bjj experience. In 2004/2004 We started seeing the Rubber Guard come into the dojo..but the guys playing it didn't really have the system so it seemed just like a holding position and of course with our Brazilian teacher it was all just ignored. Because I had previous martial arts training, I didn't completely drink the Koolaid, so I never discount anything, but because it was frowned upon and no one really understood the system (blue belts playing with stuff), it never took off so I didn't pursue it.
I've recently become the head instructor of a local MMA gym who have been working with the 10th Planet system (unofficially) for the last couple of years. I've been mostly a gi guy--literally having not done nogi (with the exception of the last 1 1/2 years) for probably at least five or six years. The last three years I've been specifically been working on my DHG game for the gi and feel really good about it. Now I'm at a school with about 15 amateur fighters and a couple pros....they want nogi! So we've come up with a Tues/Thurs mornings 10th Planet study group. We've been doing that for a couple of weeks and it's been great. I also had tremendous success rolling live using the lockdown and double underhooks. DHG is great--but it doesn't work nearly as well as 10th Planet half guard. Starting this week we will be doing evening nogi classes as well--implementing the 10th Planet system.
Anyway, I can probably keep talking for a while. I get even worse when writing. I just wanted to say hello to everyone and thanks. I am really excited about learning the system and to be here.
Thanks,
Mike
