Well for me, it's about being a little under my competition weight all year round. Since reaching it, I don't ever wanna have to worry about it or cut ever again - and it feels awesome (I compete -141.5 lbs and I walk around 137-139lbs... I was 160 back in January).
Here's what I try to get in every week, competition or not :
- 2 x weight lifting sessions (full body, either heavy 3x6 or 3x20 at a faster pace)
- 2 x HIIT sessions (around 30 minutes)
- 4 x BJJ + rolling
Plus, I bike everyday, walk a lot and stay active. I eat a ton of food and I don't deprive myself at all - I think this is one of the best mental aspect.
The best cardio I find is : every week, focus on what you wanna work when you are rolling. It's okay to tell your training partner "let's go at 30% and not hold anything, but let's not stop for 20 minutes straight". It sucks. It's hard at first, but you get used to it, you develop other aspects of your games and it forces you to stay active and agile. This will test your reflexes and your ability to improve.
You can also have really tough days where you start from the bottom and you choose a partner who's really good with cross-face/pressure-passing/grinding his way to improve his position. This will test your mental toughness and your "dig deep strength".
And the last one is... Train even if you are injured. I'm not saying go batshit crazy, but still. For example, I injured my hands pretty bad this summer, so I worked and worked and worked on my butterflies, transitions, etc. You just need to explain to your training partners what is going on and what you wanna work on. You are still learning, just at a different pace. Plus, it keeps you mentally sharp.
That's all I can think of ! Good luck and train hard !
