Finally got time to watch last weeks UFC on FOX fight between Jake Shields and Damian Maia.
Maybe I missed the threads it but I thought that fight would've gotten a bit more coverage here with Denny coaching Jake.
Whenever two world class jiu-jitsu guy meet in the octagon a lot of the time they end up stuffing each others jiu jitsu, and while I would have loved it to be the back and forth chess fight we all wanted I always find it interesting to see what does work at that level.
Being 10th Planet I know we're all about the underhooks and for me the whole fight was a big advertisement for the underhooks in mma.
Outside of the uchi mata every major grappling moment came from the underhook position.
Once Shields switched from the overhook to the underhook he hit his wall walk, and his sweeps/ reversals came from at least one underhook, also the only significant takedown attack came from Maia's double unders body lock etc.
Even Maia who employed a heavy overhook game to stifle Jake's punches, briefly switched to an underhook and began to create space using his butterflys to escape from the bottom but then switched back and remained stuck on his back for the rest of the round.
I'm curious for anybody else's opinions on the subject especially any higher belts.
Also how happy was Denny in the background during the post fight interview, he could barely stand still he was so excited
