I grind my head into my opponent's face when I'm stuck in a tight rubber guard. My goal is to distract my opponent so that they can not analyze my defense at their leisure while I attempt find some wiggle room. Also, I intend to make them uncomfortable. I do this to Eddie and he has never complained. It wears on an opponent psychologically and encourages them to transition to a position where I will have more freedom of movement. It is hard to attack while another head is pushing down into yours.

In regards to "pains moves" as a whole, it is better to see these moves from a teammate than to learn they exist in the middle of a tournament. I do not encourage my students to use pain moves, other than the grinding their head into their opponent's face. Personally, I do not like to use things like the knuckle in the throat move but I deal with it when it happens.

On the other hand, there are times when pain is inflicted to open your opponent up. For instance, if your opponent has a great kimura defense, you can drop your elbow into their ribs and they usually let go of their defense. Or if you have mount and your partner has a great T-Rex, then you might want to push your forearm into their throat so their arms will come out so you can attack them.

Whenever I show them a pain move, I point out to my students that if they go there, their competitor will likely respond in kind; so save dick moves for when you need to punish someone for using dick moves on you. Or because you need to open your opponent up.

The problem in that case was a preexisting medical condition that our brother did not yet know he had. Someone used the gag reflex and because of the preexisting medical condition, an artery collapsed. Fortunately, the man's training partners convinced him to go the hospital where he received appropriate treatment. This person can no longer rolls out of concern that he might lose another artery and possibly have a stroke.

I do understand it was an existing condition, but I don't wanna risk it still. Same thing with tasers: safe on most, unless you have certain health conditions... I'd rather not be liberal with my taser, just in case... People can gag reflex me, but I do not do it on students.

Everyone talks about "grinding your head on them" as if its not proper grappling. It's called head position. This is a legit control/positional battle similar to pummeling. I'm glad mr Ross cleared some of this up. If anyone did wrestling, you understand head position. Cain just used good head positioning and an underhook to defeat jds. Cade Nelson (10p bb) has a great pass that uses head positioning as its main form of control. Shields vs miai had tons of head position battles (boring as the fight was). As with any move, be as nice as possible in class while not sacrificing details of the move. I've been know to say "wrestling is the art of 5 weapons(limbs)". Stolen from Muay Thai of course being the art of 8. Also been known to say "use your head!" Lol. We have one of the nicest, flowiest gyms there is, and we use head positioning...

I understand the hesitation on using fist chokes and how it could be dangerous better now.

Are there not thousands of potentially undetected preexisting conditions that could make doing jiujitsu dangerous?

    How common is this condition?

Couldn't other chokes have triggered this?

What were the signs that let them know they should see a doctor? Did they get lightheaded and not recover normally, cough blood or what? I just want to be able to help if this happens to me or someone else.

    thanks.

The fist choke (I call it The Punch Choke) is probably my number 1 submission right now. Seriously.

And Eddie was telling me that Jean Jacques uses it all the time. If Jean Jacques does it, I definitely don't feel bad about it.

Brandon did it to me out at Indy. He did it as non-douchey as possible. It sucks though.

He got me with it two or three times, and it's no worse than any other choke.

Where we roll on bare floor occasionally someone gets the bright idea to rub someone's face on the floor to give them carpet burn, but that's as douchey as I've seen.

well if brandon AND jean jacques both do it then it must be fine. i wonder if it could be done from meathook.

i reckon head position is fine btw. headbutting, not so much but yeah head positioning is all good.

what i like about the thread is its bringing up different perspectives on what people think is ok and what isnt. i know when i went and trained with the monsters at 10th planet birmingham, they are all into knee on face control and stuff like that which i had never really done or even heard of much. for them it was just expected.

carpet burn is the worst! i used to roll on a friends woollen rug and it was NASTY. thank god ive got my room matted now
